I don't know about you, but for me it has been a very looooooong week. The kind of week where on Monday I'm hoping it's Thursday. Job stress will do that to you. My diversion? Eating cupcakes. My DH bought some with red, white, and blue frosting to honor Veteran's Day and the blue food coloring, we discovered, is a bit, um, overt. By overt, I mean it comes out of the body as brightly as it taken in.
Surprise!
So after noting my output was tinged bright Caribbean blue--after nearly having a heart attack--I started thinking. Not the kind of thinking that includes how to do the laundry or what it will take to get to the bank before it closes, but the kind that slips into the land of...hmmmm.
And hmmm it was. Based on the results of eating the blue icing, what would happen if I ate a blue cupcake and a red cupcake? Would the results be purple? I will report once I know, but for just know that as innocuous as this little scientific experiment has been, cures for major diseases have been spawned from less. :)
I guess you could say I've been a little crazy lately, even beyond the speculation of my next bowel movement. Not just from job stress, but from the need to write. I haven't had as much writing time lately, and so I've been a little...crazy. This is the kind of crazy that comes from having two stories floating around in my head that I feel I MUST write compounded by a brand new story idea that came from nowhere. Suddenly, I have the urge to write another vampire story, only this time with a bit of a twist. Normally, I'd welcome the muse. However, with two stories already battling it out for my attention, I don't know what I will do with the third. Write it, I suppose. But when?
I'm looking forward to the holidays, because there are scant moments when I get to write and release my characters from their prisons. It's a blessing to have that time and I look forward to it. What about you? What do the holidays bring? Looking forward to some time to write? I know I am.
Happy Reading!
Got the Blues? Me, too!
Driving to Durness
One of the reasons I wanted to visit the northern part of
Scotland was because my latest book is set there. (Actually parts of the last three.)
My Notorious Highlander takes place in June and July in the Durness and Assynt area, and I wanted to be sure I
was getting the setting and climate correct. I've been to Scotland mostly when
it's cold, windy and rainy, but I knew it had to be warmer in summer, right? Yes! :) It was a beautiful sunny day when we
drove from Ullapool up to Durness. It was in the 60s or around 70 degrees.

| Ardmair Beach |
Ardmair Beach looks out over Loch Kanaird and Isle Martin,
to the right. Isle Martin is a nature reserve owned and managed by a charitable
trust of the local community. A ferry transports visitors out in summer.
Ardmair is a fishing village. You can see the peak of Ben Mor
Coigach to the north (above.) Lots of visitors and tourists climb this mountain.
We stopped beside the road to view Stac Pollaidh (Anglicized to Stack Polly,) apparently from the
Norse, Stakkr Polla which means
"the pinnacle of the pool river." This is a really beautiful and
interesting mountain, just over 2000 feet in height. We didn't get to walk to
it but apparently there's a good path up most of it. I hope to go back and
visit it one day! I love walking and hiking in Scotland, as long as it isn't
too difficult. I've read that it's a three hour walk. It is said the views from
up there are amazing. You need a beautiful, calm, warm day such as this to hike up a mountain.

Guest Interview: Lisa Whitefern & Giveaway
Join me in welcoming fellow Samhain author, Lisa Whitefern, to Fierce Romance today.
Please tell our readers a little about Lisa Whitefern. What would our readers be surprised to know about you?
Well I was born in New York City to American parents but I've lived in New Zealand since the age of two years old so I'm basically a Kiwi. My husband and I own an ice-cream van, and that's what my husband does, he sells ice-cream from a mobile van. We have two little boys. Well perhaps I shouldn't say that anymore because one is a teenager now, and taller than me.
Mmm, ice cream. Tell us about your latest book.
When I conceived of my erotic novel Wicked Wonderland the three goals I had were to write a magical paranormal Christmas story, an emotional romance between 3 people in a ménage, and an erotic story hot enough to jingle sleigh bells and curl your mistletoe!
It's also a retelling of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer where the outcast heroine is taken on a magical erotic sleigh ride by two very sexy half-fae men. To make it more interesting there is also a very evil villain bent on her destruction.
I love holiday stories. What are you currently working on?
I'm currently working on another erotic paranormal menage with half-fae very loosely connected to Wicked Wonderland (the heroine is the daughter of the villain in Wicked Wonderland), but this one is set in Africa and has a werelion as one of the heroes. It also deals with themes of child abuse.
What do you wish you’d know before you became published?
Well I started out selling a lot of short stories to anthologies for flat rates. I don't know if that was the right choice because those books are still selling well, and of course I'm not getting any part of the royalties, since I took one off payments. If the anthology is not by a very good publisher though you could end up with very little in royalty payments so I was more comfortable taking the flat fee at the time.
The first book with my name alone on the cover was a historical paranormal erotic romance set during the Salem Witch trials and I didn't understand at the time that only a few historical periods such as the English regency really sell in historical romance. That's not to say people shouldn't be writing romance and erotic romance set in other time periods and settings, but go in with your eyes open and realize that it may be a hard sell. The story Waking the Witch has only really started selling now that people are buying Wicked Wonderland. People seem to really like it on Goodreads though.
Most people think the life of a writer is glamorous. What’s the least glamorous thing you’ve done in the past week?
Changed the sheets on my bed that my youngest child had an accident on. He wants to sleep with Mama all the time and it's hard to say no to someone who always wants to hug you. It's putting a damper on my own erotic time with my husband I must say, but I feel it's just an emotional need for my little one right now, he's scared of the dark.
Where can our readers find out more about you and your stories?
I've made a pintrest page that expresses the themes of some of my work. http://www.pinterest.com/lisawhitefern/boards/
I have a blog where I talk about market news, and opportunities for writers of fiction, especially romance and erotic fiction. http://lisawhitefern.wordpress.com/
Is there anything you’d like to ask our readers?
I'd like to ask whether readers here like to read holiday themed romance. Anyone writing a holiday themed romance?
It's a little bit late I suppose but I'll give away an ebook copy of my Halloween themed paranormal romance novella (15,000 words) Waking the Witch to one reader who comments. :-)
Be sure and comment for a chance at Lisa's giveaway! Thanks for joining us today, Lisa!

Facebook challenged
Okay,
so I may be the last person on the planet to join, but I finally signed up for
Facebook. I’m a techno-idiot at the best of times, and a *complete* idiot when
it comes to figuring my way around social media, so you’ll understand why I’ve hesitated
for so long.
Heck,
I can barely find enough time to write, never mind carving out a few more
minutes to devote to social media, but I know as an author I really should do it.
After all, it’s my career, and no one is going to be as gung-ho about it as I
am, right?
So
in I plunge at: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Jenna-Ives/609087989162481
I'm still trying
to fumble my way around and figure it out, but I can already see that there’s another girl named Jenna Ives on Facebook, so maybe I’ll try to change my page name to JennaIvesAuthor. But considering my (lack of) technical prowess, it make take a while. Or longer than a while.

Appreciating the Beauty of Sleep
I think the first and last time I realized I took sleep for granted was after the twins were born nine and half years ago. From the moment they came wailing into the world and for the following year, I would know true exhaustion. There would be moments of uncontrollable crying, temper tantrums and total meltdowns. For me...not the babies.
All I wanted was to feel well rested. To not feel like I was going insane. That I was making everyone around miserable because I was so bone-weary exhausted. The cure for this would be just a few nights of decent sleep.
After the twins started sleeping through the night and mommy started getting more sleep, I never thought I'd feel that way again.
Boy, was I wrong.
Over the last year, I've had to do some intense marathon writing sessions, but nothing, NOTHING, compares to what I've been through since June. It all started with edits with Liam and trying to juggle revisions on a book that needed a bit of work while all the kids were home for summer break and working my outside job. Not easy at all and I had to dip into my sleeping hours to get through it. I was tired a lot, but nothing I couldn't live with.
After I finished with Liam, I had to get busy on a deadline for another book that I had to put off because I had to concentrate on the mighty lion. Again, I had to keep chipping away from my sleep to get more hours in the day. Then some drama happened with Britton--no one's fault, just one of those things that happens occasionally in this industry. I've had it happen before. Unfortunately, it put us extremely behind and me and the editing team (who were awesome BTW) all had to work tirelessly to get the edits completed to get the book out by its release date at the end of this month. At this point, I was averaging maybe 4 to 5 hours a sleep a night.
I need to reiterate. I'm a sleeper. I don't like to be tired. I like being in a good mood. I like having energy. Sleep is a necessity for me to have these things. So I sleep.
Just as I received the last round of edits for Britton, I received my revision letter for Fighting Love--my very long, very intimidating, revision letter. And sleep ceased to exist. When I was in bed trying to get a few hours, my mind was all over the place and this was even with me taking sleeping pills to make myself pass out. They didn't work. Nothing was working.
I was MORE exhausted than I was the year after the twins were born. I have never been this utterly exhausted in my entire life AND I was trying to write during it. Unfortunately, I also made myself sick. That's what happens to me. I will push myself until I get physically sick and my body says, "enough," and takes me down.
This time it did it in a form of an ulcer.
I didn't have the luxury of stopping this time though. I had to get the revisions back. Exhausted and without the added benefit of caffeine since it made me miserable. I don't know how I did it, but Friday night around 10 pm I got those revision sent back and then went directly to bed.
I slept more last weekend than I swear I have in the last two weeks. LOL. Friday night I slept for 13 hours. Got up then laid on the couch all day, dozing on and off. Saturday, I slept for another 12. Sunday I was feeling a tiny bit better, but still not great. So I spent another day on the couch then slept for another 10 hours Sunday night. Monday? OMG.
It was like I had been reborn. My energy was back. My good mood was back. I was actually smiling. It no longer felt like the skin on my face was trying to slide off. I was talkative. My stomach was a thousand times better thanks to a wonderful drug called Prilosec. There was a bounce to my step.
Sleep, people, it is a beautiful, beautiful thing.

Fall at Biltmore
My friend and I visited Biltmore Estate a few days ago. It was time for some fun and relaxation after finishing my latest book. :) And we wanted to see some beautiful fall leaf colors. The leaves here in NC were not extremely colorful this year, but we did see a few bright, gorgeous trees. The one above is next to the ticket office. I forgot my Twelve-month pass at home and was certain they'd tell me I couldn't get in. But that wasn't the case at all. They told me to visit the ticket office and I'd be issued a new pass. Yay! No problem.
As you can see, it was a very cloudy day. There was only a tiny sprinkle of rain as we were arriving. Otherwise it was just cloudy and comfortable, in the 60s. Just right for walking outside. We enjoy taking the upper path through the woods from the parking area to this elevated and spectacular view of the house.

My Notorious Highlander excerpt...
He frowned down at the
ground far below and the woman dashing away from the castle. Was that Jessie?
Her head was covered, hiding her hair, and she faced away from him. But the
woman was tall and slim, and she moved exactly like Jessie. She must have slipped
past the guards and out the postern gate, and was now headed away from castle,
in the opposite direction from the bay. Where was she going? She normally
walked on the beach, but she was not headed that way now. Nor was she walking
at a leisurely pace. Nay, she was practically running. When she glanced back
over her shoulder once, a lock of her copper hair gleamed in the sunlight, and
he got a glimpse of half her face. Aha, 'twas indeed Jessie. Why was she
slipping away?
Trying to escape him?
Or had something happened?
Torrin rushed down
several sets of winding steps until he reached the bailey. Not having a key to
the postern gate, he asked the guards to open the main portcullis for him. They
also gave him his basket-hilt broadsword, for he might need it to protect
Jessie.
Once outside the walls,
Torrin ran toward the east. She had already disappeared from sight, difficult
in this flat landscape near the shore, but gorse bushes grew here and there in
small groves. Once he passed a group of them, he saw her plaid-covered head
disappear behind another cluster of bushes. He was determined to catch up to
her without her seeing him. She wasn't traveling toward the village, and he
needed to find out what she was up to.
They must have walked
for more than a mile when he lost sight of her. Muttering curses, he glanced
this way and that, then ran forward. The rocky shore and a drop off lay ahead.
Had she gone in that direction? Saints!
Had she fallen off the cliff?
His heart rate soaring
toward the sky, he quickened his pace.
Once at the edge, he
saw it wasn't a cliff, but simply a steep bank of sand about thirty feet high.
Beyond it was a small golden sand beach with black boulders protruding here and
there from the sand. He lay down and belly-crawled to the edge so she wouldn't
notice him. Aye, indeed, she was descending a rock and sand path along the edge
of the bank. What in blazes was she doing here?
He scooted sideways and
hid himself better behind a clump of thistles. He was wicked for spying on her,
but he had to protect her. Not that he truly expected anyone to be all the way
out here, a mile or more from the village and further than that from the
castle.
She strolled along the
wee beautiful beach, which was enclosed and cut off from other areas of the
coast. Cliffs jutted out on each side, making it very secluded. He could understand
why she loved this place. 'Twas one of the loveliest spots he had yet seen. To
add to its appeal, a slight breeze blew in off the sea, but 'twas a warm summer
day.
Jessie perched on one of the boulders and gazed out
to sea. Was she daydreaming? He hoped she was thinking of him.
Moments later, she got to her feet and walked further
along the shore, her gaze searching the tops of the cliffs and sand bank. He
ducked. Had she seen him or sensed his presence? He kept his head down and
hoped she didn't notice his plaid.
She hastened to the far end of the strip of sand,
which was more concealed behind the large rocks. Though she disappeared from
sight, he hesitated to crawl closer to the edge for fear she might spot him.
She appeared again, wearing only her white smock. Hiking
it to her knees, she ran into the water.
"Saints," he hissed. She was going
swimming? He chuckled, but forced himself to be quiet. Not that she could hear
him over the waves crashing into the boulders below. What an adventurous spirit
she had. It only made him fall harder for her.
How lovely she looked, her fiery red hair streaming
down her back as she waded deeper into the water reflecting the blue sky. She
disappeared behind a black boulder.
A swim would be perfect right now. While she was
hidden from view, he took the opportunity to slip down the bank along the
narrow trail she had used earlier. He hastily removed all his clothing and left
it on the dry sand behind a rock, then crept between the boulders. The
sun-warmed, wet sand felt good against his bare feet. Then the edges of the
cold surf washed over his toes. He often took swims in Loch Assynt, so he was
accustomed to cold water. It appeared Jessie was, too.
He waded into the water and peered around the last
boulder. When her back was turned, he slid beneath the water and swam
underneath a wave. When he emerged twenty feet out, she happened to be facing
him. Her eyes wide, she screamed and swam toward the shore.
"Jessie! 'Tis only me," he called.

Silken Canvas Releases in Print Nov 5th! & Giveaway!!
Product Warnings
Contains a sexy, tortured artist, his gorgeous muse, and a string of pearls that creates one very erotic BDSM fantasy.
I love seeing my all full-length novels (and anthologies) make it into print, but I think I am most excited about Silken Canvas becoming available as a trade paperback. With that gorgeous cover, can you blame me? The hero in Silken Canvas is a very successful erotic artist/photographer and I asked for a cover that would look like a piece of erotic art. The Samhain art department didn't disappoint. I squeed when I got my author copies! They're beautiful
Silken Canvas is one of my favorite books. So much emotion and passion in this reunited couple. So much sensuality in the photo/art sessions. And one HOT tortured hero.
Excerpt:
When she walked into the studio again, Brendan was waiting for her. He smiled and dove his hands into a large box sitting on the counter. He pulled out several long strands of beads, then turned to wink at her. “Take off the robe and let’s get started.”
It was a little easier now to drop the robe and bare herself in front of Brendan. She glanced down at the box of pearls, then back to him. “Wow. That’s a lot of pearls.”
“I have a lot of plans for these pearls,” he replied, that silky, seductive tone back in his voice. He glanced between her and the beads in his hand, as if he was judging, selecting. He dropped all but one long strand. “Hold out your hands, wrists together.”
Brendan wrapped the beads once around her wrists, then looped the rest of the strand over so it hung down like the ends of a bow. “Bound by pearls. An elegant fantasy, wouldn’t you say?” He led her over to a black velvet backdrop he’d pulled down over the far wall.
“How many different types of binding have I used on you? Ropes, of course. And ribbons. I loved the way those red ribbons looked wrapped around your wrists.”
