Need vs Want

Have you ever been pulled and tugged and pushed to fill a want when you know you have other needs you need to fulfill first? Like…obligations?

I am behind on word count. It’s a need. I need to get 5700 words done today on She-Wolf. I need to work on a bear and get it finished this weekend so I can ship it on Monday. Those are deadline needs.

But I also needed to vacuum and mop the floors. And dust. I did the floors, and some of the dusting. I also washed all the puppies’ bedding, towels I used on them, etc. I have too many needs.

Then there are the darn wants. I’m usually good about fulfilling needs first, then wants as a treat, just like if the puppies do what they’re supposed to, they get their treats. :)

So, I started watching Outlander. I bought the tape. Can’t get it on my limited channels and I’ve done the free premium channels for 3 mos and rarely ever watch them. But while working on the bears, I’ll watch a movie. And I’m hooked. And I want to watch more. Love anything that’s historical, love time travel. Love the Highlands. So enjoying so far. And I want to watch more of it. I could fulfill a need while I do so–make up the remaining bear for the  order.

But, I have to get my word count. And that’s nagging at me. So first the writing, and then the bear. But I also want to play Dragonage Inquisition. RPGs are really addictive. I’m goal oriented. I want to solve quests, fulfill missions, take down the bad guys, rescue the good guys. I work long hours on writing and promoting. I enjoy it, but I also need a break from it–I tell myself, just to go and fight monsters, etc. :)

Again, I tell myself–yes, you can. You can play all day long! IF you get your word count. *sigh*
So I have to post another blog [need] and then after that? I’ll play my game for a while, then stop and watch the movie and work on the bear some more.

But what I really want to do is skip writing and play the game.

Writing prevails. I write 2500 words a day, but as you can see with needing 5700 today, I’m behind.

Off to write another blog and see what wins out. Writing? Or…..Gaming.

I have to say that some of the reason I’m not getting tons of word count is that I’m getting closer to the end. I have to wrap up loose ends and figure out how I’m going to end it, how I’m going to get the hero and heroine to say I do without it sounding like any of the other books. So that means lots of thinking…

Have a super great day!

Having a Routine...The Puppy is SUPPOSED to Be Sleeping...

Hey, just because I can’t sleep, doesn’t mean that the puppy shouldn’t. I just had too much to do, so I was up at 4 am this morning, HOPING Max would sleep. No such luck. He was like it was our regular time to wake up between 5-6:30, depending on how late I worked the night before.
So we had to go out, and we had to eat and we had to play and I was trying to get some of the million and one things done, like get the bear ready to ship, and a Christmas card ready and bills paid, and Max is happily getting into mischief. Of course. :)  I can’t say what he grabbed hold of this morning and was tearing through the house with until I caught him.  He was having a fine time of it. I couldn’t help laughing. Which only encourages the little devil.

So I usually sit down first thing to work on blogs and emails and such and stop to play with Max often until he tuckers out. But I REALLY had things to do. So I wasn’t doing anything the way I was supposed to. He jumped onto my desk chair and looked at me. I was supposed to be sitting right there. I was getting a bunch of stuff ready for the post office. After I did that, I sat down, and he was in my lap to sleep.

Many years ago before kids, I was required to go to a military wives’ luncheon. I as on Active Duty at the time, had no husband or kids, no pets at the time, either, but had them growing up. So when a woman asked if I had kids, I wisely said, “No.”  I didn’t mention no husband either, which I would have to have to be a military wife. *sigh*

Everyone was talking about their kids and I said something about puppies being just like them. Hey, I babysat kids and babies when I was a teen, so it wasn’t that I didn’t know about kids. And I’d help raise a number of puppies, toy poodles, Afghan Hound, and a silky terrier. And guess what? They’re just like little kids.

When I was substitute teaching in the kindergarten classes, they were so used to doing everything in a certain way. Not my way, of course, but the teacher’s way.

The kids had a routine they felt comfortable with. So do puppies. And you know what? So do we as grownups.

With Max’s coming home with me, talk about my routine being out of whack. But we’re beginning to settle down into somewhat of a routine and that makes us both happy. When Tanner comes home, he’ll have to learn our routine too, and then he’ll be confused when I don’t stick with it. But, hey, I’m only human.

And we had a breakthrough! Max laid down when I gave him the word command. Woohoo! Now he circles and begs.

Do you have a routine? How do you feel when it’s  out of whack?

Have a great Saturday!!!

Prince Max, the Toilet Paper Thief!

Well, I finally succumbed. With all the traveling I’ve been doing, I wouldn’t have done so, but I’m not traveling as much this year and even less next year, so I decided to get a dog. I’ve always had pets, but when my standard poodle died, I was working full time and writing full time so I figured it wasn’t a good idea to get another. Then I was writing full time and taking trips all the time.
I wanted another dog that didn’t shed. I’ve had poodles, silkies, and an Afghan hound. And I had a Lab, loved her, but she shed all the time. Course I had short haired cats too, and one long-haired one. Not all at the same time.

This time I went for a Havanese because they’re supposed to be good with kids and dogs and cats and people in general. Just a sweet disposition. So this is Prince Maximilian, Max for short.

He’s now crashed out on my lap. I taught him to sit and come. :)

Max Caught with the Evidence!
Max Caught with the Evidence!
Okay, Halvanese have a reputation for stealing paper toilet rolls. I didn’t believe it. Not in my house. No way. Never. And there he is, sitting on his towel chewing on a brand new paper towel. Yep. Cabinet door was open. So never say never.

I should have gotten a picture. The toilet roll was nearly as big as him. But when I was commenting on this issue, I looked down at him, and caught him with a remnant of the toilet paper. Caught in the act.

Okay, so I have been rereading His Wild Highland Lass. Nearly done with that, and I need to get back to Phantom Fae.

Prince Max dressed for Christmas. Yes, yes, his collar flipped up. Hey, I was trying to get him to sit still long enough while the camera focused. :)  Next time!

Off to work on His Wild Highland Lass. Note the Scottish leash? If they’d had a jaguar one, I would have gotten it.

Have a great Saturday! I need to get cracking on word count for Phantom Fae too. :)

Puppy Party

Welcome to the newest addition to my family:

My oldest daughter always wanted a dog. For various good reasons, we never got one.

This past summer she spent every free moment pining after dogs online. I knew the moment was imminent. Three weeks ago, she and her roommates "got lost", ended up at the pet store, and came home with 2 guinea pigs. (Note: this was the first day she moved into her post-college apartment.) We hoped the rodents would stave off the craving.

It was not to be. Last week, she managed to find the same pet store, and bought a dog. He is certainly one of the cutest dogs ever. A cavachon. He has the sweetest personality. She brought him over to our house on Monday. All the neighbors swarmed.
I had to leave the party to make dinner. After dinner, I went upstairs to work. I could hear the party resume in our front yard. I finally decided I'd better go out to chase the kids in to do homework. What did I see? My neighbors and family, sitting on my driveway, because they couldn't bear to leave and we had put away our outdoor furniture.

"Well," I said, "do we know how to entertain or what?"

So I joined the party (abandoning homework for the greater good). One of my neighbors, a senior in high school, a big guy football player, asked if he could invite his friends over to see this dog. (That's how cute the puppy is.) So here I am, entertaining friends and strangers, on the driveway. No food. No booze. No one would leave.

Who knew that little bundle of cuteness was an instant party?

And let me close by saying, no one would ever sit on the driveway for the pleasure of my company!

Are your pets a good excuse for a party?
