It's been a hard winter. You want to know how I know that? Because I actually kept scoping what the groundhog said on 2/2, like that's an accurate weather prediction. However, desperate for spring, I bought into what the little rodent said. And it appears, although with some hesitation, spring is on its way.
But that's not what you came here for, is it? You came here for something exciting, and, finally, I have something exciting to talk about. Wanna hear?
So my friend, Helena, is getting married for the 3rd time, which is, I'm sure, a charm. Although, given Helena's track record, maybe not. Helena and Mike are getting married on 3/17, the luckiest day of the year according to their ancestors, who were all Irish. They are getting married at 3:17 on the dot, too. However, that's about it. I think Mike wanted to go all the way with the "We're so lucky to have found each other" theme, but Helena convinced him to not go overboard with it. It promises to be a nice wedding, and one that, I'm sure, will be quite memorable.
Why, might you ask?
Because Helena is friends with Ann, Ann's Jerk, and Amy, Ann's sister who is now married to Ed, Ann's ex-fiance who left her at the altar for his current wife, and because she's invited the whole crew to her nuptials, that's why. I asked Helena if she'd told Mike about Ann's wedding disaster and the aftermath, and she said she had. His response? "There's no bad luck they can bring on us! Look, they're all happy now." Helena's gleeful take on the whole thing? "This is going to be effing fantastic! Wanna take bets on who swings first?" That's my friend, always looking for entertainment wherever she can get it.
And she might get it. Amy and Ann do talk, even though Amy stole Ed from right under her bridal nose, but everyone knows Ann is incredibly vengeful and holds grudges forever, and even though she's happy working on her "relationship" with The Jerk, she still has a score to settle with Amy.
If you read the Bridesmaid Sort Of posts from a while back, you might be wondering what happened after Ann and The Jerk's embrace. Well, it was kind of like that scene in An Officer and a Gentleman where Richard Gere carries Deborah Winger out of the factory, except Ann's a bit heavier than Deb and The Jerk is waaaaay older than Richard Gere, so it looked like too stumbling drunks half carrying each other out of a crowded bar. In short, though, Ann decided to give The Jerk another try, even though he's technically married to a new wife. He and Ann are "dating" until he and the current legal Mrs. Jerk work though their conscious uncoupling. I swear on Gwyneth Paltrow's pink Oscar de la Renta dress that I'm not kidding...they are consciously uncoupling like she did with Chris Martin, or at least doing their version of it. What it amounts to is that The Jerk is getting steady, um, attention from both Ann and Mrs. Jerk, and he's never been happier. Ann thinks she's going to win back her ex-hubby from the trophy hussy who stole him, so she's thrilled--to get The Jerk back and to get revenge on Mrs. Jerk. And Mrs. Jerk thinks she's going to convince her errant spouse that he's just having a mid-life crisis and wants to sow some seeds, which is, ironically, what Ann told him when he confessed he'd been sleeping with his dental hygienist, who became Mrs. Jerk, for six months. She thinks he'll come running back to her younger arms and fuller breasts, but Ann is giving her a run for her money, or rather for The Jerk's money.
So there you have it. Helena and Mike's wedding is going to be center stage to Ann and Amy's showdown, while Ed and The Jerk stand around sipping bad wine and comparing sisters. Hopefully, Helena and Mike will take it all in stride, and, if we're lucky, everything will go off splendidly.
I hope your spring is shaping up to be as exciting as mine promises to be. Happy Reading!

Good News
So I have a bit of news...
I'm going to be a mother-in-law again, and I'm thrilled. Our youngest son has found a lovely mate, the girl of his dreams, and now they're planning their impending nuptials. In like three months. God bless 'em.
Seriously. They decided they want to get married in February of 2016, and so they will. He has a particular job obligation and she has a particular school obligation and they want the majority of the family to be there on their special--albeit very cold--day, and February is the only month that worked out for all those things to happen.
I know what you're thinking. Why not just wait and have it when it's convenient for the happy couple? Well, given my son's a workaholic, that's not even ever a possibility. But on a more positive note, they are just wanting to start building a life together, and they don't really care about the "wedding" details as much as they care about the marriage after. Given my hippie background (see the Bridesmaids post from a few months ago), I couldn't be happier. This young lady is more concerned about partnering with my son than saying yes to the dress, and I have to admit, I'm kind of happy to hear it.
I mean, they've got plans. They want to do this together and that together, and they seem genuinely interested in building a life together, as opposed to just planning this huge wedding and being special for a day. They want what they have to be special for all their lives. My son actually said that when I asked him what not to wear to the wedding (after seeing all those articles are terrible mother-in-laws upstaging brides at their weddings). He was like, "We're just glad you're going to be there. Wear whatever you want. We'll have the rest of our lives to laugh at it if it sucks real bad."
Is this my son or what?
Thank you for reading. I had to share the good news and the idea that there are folks out there who care more about the marriage than the wedding (remember my good friend Ann?). I'm all aglow about the big day, but even more happy that they seem to want to really just hang out and love each other. Sounds like a plan to me. :)

Wedding Pics!
We were blessed with an absolutely glorious fall day for my son's wedding this past weekend. I've been asked for pictures, so I was lucky that a lot of people around took them. It was hard to carry my phone in my hand all day, so I got very few myself.
The wedding took place at the Hall of Philosophy at Chautauqua Institution. Blue skies, sunshine, colorful leaves. Perfect.
The happy couple at the rehearsal luncheon on Friday:
And as husband and wife:
They rode away in a horse-drawn carriage:
The reception hall, ready for guests:
The cake table:
Party time!
Singing to his new bride:
Lots of great music. Laughter. Dancing:
It was a wonderful couple of days, not only celebrating the marriage, but doing it with friends and family. But, man, I was exhausted yesterday! And life is back to normal today. Hope you enjoyed the pictures.

Coming Soon
October...
Yes, somehow this is the last day of September, and October 2013, that for so long seemed so far away, will be here in a blink of an eye. Almost two years ago, my son and his fiancée set a date of October 12,2013 for their wedding. Plans that were made months ago, years ago, are finally all coming together. The bride is getting a little stressed out as she strives to make sure everything runs according to plan, but I've told her that no matter what happens, at the end of the day they'll still be married. It will be an outdoor wedding in the middle of October in western New York and while the leaves should be in brilliant color, the temperature is unpredictable, so I'd appreciate any good thoughts you can send our way. And look forward to pictures.
The other event I've been looking forward to in October is the release of my first royalty romance, Her Royal Masquerade. The release date is October 21st. If you enjoy classic romances like Harlequin Presents or Desire, or any emotional romance with a hot-blooded hero and a heroine who gets in over her head, I hope you'll give it a try.
Time is running out for Prince Vittorio. His father’s health is failing and he must find a royal bride. Fast. He’s never forgotten his glimpse of a beautiful Scandinavian princess and lures her to his Mediterranean country with an invitation to his father’s birthday ball. He’d planned to propose a marriage agreement as cold as her icy reputation, but then he discovers she's as colorful and warm as a summer sunset. The heat between them flares red-hot and when she allows him to seduce her, Vittorio sees his future unfolding just as he had planned. But what he doesn’t know is that the woman in his bed is not a princess at all.
The last thing schoolteacher Mia Holmberg expects when she masquerades as her royal cousin is to be swept off her feet by a charming prince. The incredible night in Vittorio’s arms is like a fairy tale come true, but she’d never want the life of a real princess, with all its pomp and politics. Knowing they can never have a future together, she slips out of his bed and back to reality, where she belongs.
But Vittorio discovers the deception and kidnaps Mia back to his palace, demanding she be his mistress until the real princess appears. Despite her attempts to stay aloof, Mia soon learns there’s more to the prince than arrogance and attitude, but now she’s in danger of falling in love with a man she can never have.
I'm writing book #2 in the Her Royal Romance series, titled Her Royal Bodyguard. You can look for that in 2014. I'll keep you updated when I have the release date. And book #3, Her Royal Mistake, will follow later in 2014.
And speaking of keeping updated on any upcoming releases and other news. You can sign up for my mailing list. I promise I won't clog your inbox. I'll only send you info on my releases. And it's possible I may have a mailing-list-only contest from time to time.
So what do you have going on in October?

The Dress for Success
Want to know a secret? I'm a die-hard romantic. Okay, so that's not much of a secret. lol I mean, I write in the romance genre so people naturally assume I'm all into weddings and such, and they're right. However, I think they'd be surprised to know the reasons why.
Many girls dream of their wedding day, planning and calculating and hoping and waiting. I did, too. But there was a difference. By the time I was old enough to actually get married, my fantasies mainly focused on the dress and flowers, with the flowers a very distant second. Oh, the groom was there, sort of a foggy, sexy, and heroic figure in the background, but to be quite honest, he really didn't show up until the honeymoon. Heh heh heh.
So I finally realized that I'd been looking forward to finding the perfect dress, not the perfect mate. That's not a bad thing, actually. It made me more aware of why I wanted to get married and made me question what I wanted to get out of the whole endeavor (and it made me realize I have a dress fetish, but that's neither here nor there). I decided I could get a dress any day if I wanted and take pictures of myself emoting like a model all over the place, but the groom...well, I wasn't looking for a stunt double for my dress anymore. I was looking for something more substantial.I had come to understand that weddings are nice ceremonies, but it's the people involved that you should really get excited about, not all the trappings.
This is why this one reality TV show, Say Yes to the Dress (I think that's the name), annoys me to no end. In it, TV crews follow prospective brides as they search for the perfect wedding dress. Simple, right? Nope. There's nothing simple about salespeople using the guise of caring about your "perfect day" to sell you the most expensive dress in the shop. Nothing really very nice about it either.
Almost every time my channel-surfing landed me on an episode of this show, the same scene unfolds. The bride and her entourage enter the bridal salon and are greeted by an enthusiastic salesperson, who chats with the bride about what she's looking for and asks her about her price range. The salesperson then carefully selects about a dozen gowns for the bride to try on while her girlfriends, sisters, mother, etc., squeal in delight and clap.
Here's the catch: Nearly every single time, the bride tries on the gowns that look okay on her, but then she tries on the special one that the salesperson chose especially for her, the one that makes her look younger, thinner, more beautiful than she actually is, and one that also does laundry, doubles as a vibrator, and volunteers in a soup kitchen once a month. Yes, this is THE perfect dress that the bride has been fantasizing about since she was conceived. Unfortunately, it's the one that is just an eensy bit out of her price range by at least a thousand dollars. The salesperson knew this but included it anyway because she just knew that it would be nearly impossible for the bride to take it off without going into hysterics. Teary-eyed, the bride stares at herself in the mirror, bottom lip trembling, until someone offers to sell a kidney to make up the difference in the price of the dress. Ms. Bride is sooooo happy! Now her day will be perfect, except her mom will miss it because she's recovering from having her kidney removed so You-Know-Who could have the dress of her dreams.
Seriously, it's aggravating to see a seasoned salesperson knowingly bring out five or six mediocre dresses that fall within the bride's budget and then throw in a dress she knows the bride will just have to have that's 1-5K more. It's a trick of the trade to get brides to spend more money, and it's unpleasant to watch. I'd like to just once see a bride call the salesperson on it, saying something like, "That dress is too expensive. Bring me one just like it in my price range. You don't have one? See ya."
I know I'm being critical, but I realized a long time ago what is really important in a wedding--that person standing beside you (no, not your maid of honor...on the other side). If you want a wedding dress, save up and go buy one. Wear it on Halloween. Wear it to a frenemy's wedding to tick her off. But don't substitute a costly gown for the thrill of having your healthy mother, both kidneys intact, watching you pledge your love to someone who would never try to sell you dress out of your price range.
Have a lovely weekend!

A Wedding in The Future
This weekend has been an exciting one. Our son proposed to his girlfriend this weekend. They've been dating for about a year and a half, and I'm happy to say I like her a lot. They compliment each other well even though they seem to be opposites in many ways.
My son is a performer, a creative personality, into movies and theater in a big way, where his girlfriend is not. They met at a local bar where he was singing karaoke. She was there with her mother and a friend. The story goes when she mentioned she thought the guy up there singing was cute, the friend went up and gave my son her phone number. They've pretty much been together ever since.
She's gotten him to be more responsible, getting him to start saving money after a few months, while his parents had tried unsuccessfully for years! LOL. He got the ring a couple months ago and somehow she found out he'd bought it. She even knew where he'd stashed it. He still made her wait until this weekend to propose.
She said yes. :)
