Off To England!

My fellow Fierce Romance blogger Leigh Court and I are off to England for a fun-filled (er, I mean research-focused) ten-day trip.

Leigh will probably have pictures for you by her next blog post on July 26.  Since Leigh writes historical romance, she’s insisting we take archery lessons and learn the finer points of falconry while we’re there. We'll probably be visiting ruins of old castles as well. On the other hand, she’s letting me drag her to a Rolling Stones concert in Hyde Park in London! This is why we get along so well J

Who knows? If we get really lucky, we may be in England when Duchess Kate gives birth! I’d love to be part of the country-wide celebrations.

So ‘cheerio’ until next month!

Cheers,
Jenna

Setting the Setting

It is the middle of summer, and all I can think about is writing. Most specifically, trying to craft the settings in my stories. I've been obsessed with travel this year, as well as exotic places. But what is exotic?

I'm beginning to wonder what exotic means because to some it's just a few meters down the road. To others, it's a world away. Then to others, it's a completely different world, an imagined world that a writer introduces to readers through a story. Everything has to make sense and fall into place, including the cultures, politics, societies, geography, etc. What a responsibility that is!

I've traveled out of the country on several different occasions, and I have my favorite places. Right now, they're battling it out in a number of ways. I've got stories that feel they need the hometown touch, stories that demand the heat of the Caribbean, and stories that will wither if they aren't set in a world beyond what we already know. How do I choose?

I don't. I've started working on more than one story at a time. Right now one is set in a national park and the other is set in a world I've created, one that's arisen after the earth has been divided by catastrophe into several different kingdoms. Some are desperate to unite, while others simply want to take over the world. It takes a bit of juggling, jumping back and forth from a setting that can be researched to one that has no defined parameters geographically or in any other way. However, it's also heck of a lot of fun. Time to get back to it!

What kind of setting do you like? Small town? Big city? Country? Another planet? Island paradise? Please do share. And wherever you are, happy reading!

Blair Castle

Entry gate to Blair Castle
Blair Castle is located in northern Perthshire, near the village of Blair Atholl in central Scotland, in the southern Highlands (the Grampians). Historically, it was a strategic location which controlled the main route from the south up to Inverness.  Atholl (from the Gaelic Ath Fodhla) was an ancient Pictish Kingdom, which had kings in very early times. After that, Mormaers ruled over the area, and finally earls and dukes in later times.

Blair Castle
Blair Castle is now known as the seat of nineteen generations of Stewarts and Murrays of Atholl (earls and dukes).  But some of the earlier earls were named Strathbogie (said to have been a semi-Normanized Gaelic family from Fife) including: David de Strathbogie, 8th Earl of Atholl (d. 1270), John de Strathbogie, 9th Earl of Atholl (d. 1306) and David II Strathbogie  (d. 1326). Records show that in 1269, their neighbor John Cumming (Comyn) Lord of Badenoch moved in while the then earl was away on the crusades, and started building a tower. The earl complained to King Alexander III and regained his land. He kept the tower and incorporated it into his own castle. Cumming's Tower still stands as the oldest and tallest part of the castle. After rebelling against the king, Robert the Bruce in 1322, David II was forced to forfeit the titles and estates.

Above you can just see the tip top of Cumming's Tower at the back of the castle.

Clock Tower
As you can see, it was a bright, sunny day when we visited Blair Castle last September. First, we went inside to tour the castle. The entrance hall is amazing as it also serves as an armory with a massive amount of historical weaponry on display including targes and muskets used at the Battle of Culloden. We were only allowed to take photos in one room within the castle. This room displayed many weapons, armor, paintings and other historical pieces.

Throughout the castle we saw many red deer stag heads and antlers. One reason for this is that red deer have been kept and raised at the estate for centuries as pets or like livestock in the Red Deer park. Lots of them were named. The stag in the entry hall was named Tilt after nearby Glen Tilt. He was killed in a fight with another stag in 1850 at age 13. Click here to see a photo of the Entrance Hall. You can just see Tilt's head behind the table.

The earldom changed hands several times over the next century. It was held briefly by a Campbell and others until 1457 when King James II granted the earldom of Atholl to his half-brother John Stewart as a reward. John was sent to subdue the troublesome Macdonalds, Lords of the Isles, with the royal injunction Furth Fortune and fill the fetters. A modern day translation would be: Get the chains on him and the future's yours. He was successful in his quest and this became the family motto. The 3rd Earl added the great hall to Blair Castle. Mary Queen of Scots visited the 4th Earl in 1564 and stayed at Blair Castle. The 5th Earl died without sons in 1595. He had a daughter, Dorothea who married Sir William Murray of Tullibardine. Her son, John, became the 1st Murray Earl of Atholl in 1629 and the title has remained with the Murrays since then. The title Earl of Atholl has been recreated ten times. Each time it was recreated, that person was the 1st Earl of Atholl.

An amazing view over the Scottish countryside. The grass is incredibly green. I loved seeing the mountains in the distance.

A road through the beautiful estate.

I hope you've enjoyed this brief tour.  Next time we'll take a walk through Diana's Grove and see the incredible tall trees.

Thanks!

A Royal Romance

I admit to indulging in several guilty pleasures. One of them is being addicted to the classic category romances starring an arrogant, powerful, seductive hero who is eventually brought down to his knees by the love of a strong, feisty heroine. You know, those romances that have titles with words like royalty, mistress, and billionaire.

I've written my own category romance, Her Royal Masquerade, featuring a handsome prince looking for a princess bride at any cost. I'm pleased to announce I'll be taking my first spin at self-publishing with this book. I hope to share a beautiful cover soon and am planning a fall release. This will be the first in a three book Her Royal Romance series. I'm excited to share the blurb with you today.

Time is running out for Prince Vittorio. His father’s health is failing and he must find a royal bride. Fast. He’s never forgotten his glimpse of a beautiful Scandinavian princess and lures her to his Mediterranean country with an invitation to his father’s birthday ball. He’d planned to propose a marriage agreement as cold as her icy reputation, but then he discovers she's as colorful and warm as a summer sunset. The heat between them flares red-hot and when she allows him to seduce her, Vittorio sees his future unfolding just as he had planned. But what he doesn’t know is that the woman in his bed is not a princess at all.

The last thing schoolteacher Mia Holmberg expects when she masquerades as her royal cousin is to be swept off her feet by a charming prince. The incredible night in Vittorio’s arms is like a fairy tale come true, but she’d never want the life of a real princess, with all its pomp and politics. Knowing they can never have a future together, she slips out of his bed and back to reality, where she belongs. But Vittorio discovers the deception and kidnaps Mia back to his palace, demanding she be his mistress until the real princess appears. Despite her attempts to stay aloof, Mia soon learns there’s more to the prince than arrogance and attitude, but now she’s in danger of falling in love with a man she can never have.

This won't be an erotic romance, like most of my recent releases have been, but I promise a sexy, emotional read just the same. I'll be sharing updates on Her Royal Masquerade as they become available and have to say that I'm really excited about this book! I'm busy working on book two in the series, Her Royal Bodyguard.

Coming Soon!

I'm happy to announce that while I was on vacation in sunny Florida, my editor at Ellora's Cave accepted my newest submission! What made where I was when she accepted it so special, is because the story, Sunset Tryst, is set in the very place where my family and I have vacationed for the last 8 summers.

Sunset Tryst is a hot & steamy menage set in the tiny beachfront community of Inlet Beach along the Emerald Waters of the Florida Panhandle. I couldn't have picked a more gorgeous setting than the white sugar sand beaches for a place for Riley, Garrett and Evan to meet and fall in love. I'm beyond excited for this book to come out!

Here's the tentative blurb:

Sun, sand, surf…and sex.

Riley Watson is looking to kick off her vacation a little early as the medical convention she’s attending in a gorgeous Florida beach town winds down. When two sexy men offer her an unforgettable night of heat and passion, the last thing she expects is to get tangled up in a maelstrom of searing emotions. Together, Garrett and Evan are her most vivid erotic fantasy—and her most heartbreaking reality—all rolled into one. As red-hot desire and aching intimacy escalates, Riley is forced to pack a lifetime of ecstasy into mere days. But after nature takes a bite out of her unexpected affair, will their gut-wrenching goodbye be all they have left as a reminder of their sunset tryst?

I'll keep y'all posted regarding the release date! Until then, enjoy the rest of your long holiday weekend! Happy Birthday America!

The Italian Garden at Biltmore

My friend and I paid another visit to Biltmore a few days ago. Just because it's in the mountains doesn't mean it was cool. No, it was a hot day and I almost melted. We walked in front of the house and toward the gardens.

I loved these two beautiful pots filled with plants.

First, we visited the Italian Garden. This series of three water garden pools was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead in the late 1800s. When the Vanderbilts lived in the house, they used this space as an outdoor room. It's very elegant with statuary and beautiful water plants of all types.

Waterlilies

Baby bull frog
We saw several of these tiny, baby bull frogs and also some still in tadpole form.

Another view toward the house. Here you can see the shape of the pond.

Tropical water lily

View away from the house.

Koi
I loved watching this beautiful silvery-white koi fish. It was huge. The ponds contained a few dozen fish.

Lotus
These ponds were almost filled with lotus plants and they were just starting to bloom. I have a pond and would love to grow lotus but haven't been able to. You will also see a dragonfly at the bottom of the above photo. I love all the wildlife around ponds.

Hope you enjoyed this little excursion to the Italian Garden at Biltmore. :)

My Brave Highlander: Battle-hardened warrior Dirk MacLerie isn't who everyone thinks he is. He's Dirk MacKay, heir apparent to the MacKay chiefdom and Dunnakeil Castle on the far north coast of Scotland. When he returns home after a long absence, will his clan know him and will the duplicitous enemy who tried to murder him twelve years ago kill him in truth this time?

Lady Isobel MacKenzie is a beautiful young widow betrothed to yet another Highland chief by her brother's order. But when her future brother-in-law accosts her and threatens to kill her, she is forced to flee into a Highland snowstorm. When she runs into a rugged and imposing man she thought dead, she wonders if he will turn her over to her enemy or take her to safety.

Dirk remembers the enchanting, dark-eyed Isobel from when he was a lad, but now she is bound to another man by legal contract—an important detail she would prefer to forget. She wishes to choose her own husband and has her sights set on Dirk. But he would never steal another man's bride… would he? The tantalizing lady fires up his passions, testing his willpower and honor at every turn, even as some of his own treacherous clansmen plot his downfall.

Just FINISH Something!

It's hard to believe we're halfway through 2013. Reviewing my 2nd quarter goal list, I realized how far short I fell, writing-wise. It's disappointing, but I can attribute it to a few things.

* Some tough comments from my beloved cps meant that I put one project on the back burner while I try to figure out how to make changes. I've started and stopped a few other projects since then, but haven't finished a darn thing.

* Making two long trips during May & June didn't help. I didn't get any writing done during those three weeks and it's been difficult to get back into the writing routine since.

* After my health scare on vacation, I've spent more of my time focused on eating better, exercising more, and relaxing more. This means I didn't write as much as I did during the first quarter, but it was good to try to find a better balance.

All this means I've really had very few new words written in the past three months. That needs to change. Jumping on the Camp Nano bandwagon is the first step. Once I finish this blog post, I have to write at least 1700 words on my new project before I can do anything else. This could only take a couple hours. This could take all day.

I really, really hope it doesn't take all day!

If I make my Nano word count, I'll have one project finished by the end of July. Then I have two novellas to finish after that. And a book that needs to be taken apart and put back together.

Can all that be done in the next quarter? I don't know, but I'm going to try. I need to finish something. One project. Two projects. More projects.

Oh! And speaking of the next quarter, my next release, Voluptuous, will release during the 3rd quarter of 2013. It's available for pre-order now and will release on Sept 6th.

Have a great 3rd quarter! Do you make quarterly (or other) goals?
