The Turkey Trot

Our family has a rather interesting Thanksgiving tradition - the Turkey Trot. The Turkey Trot is a 5K run on Thanksgiving morning. My husband has been doing this run for years, and when our boys were old enough to run a 5K we made it a family tradition. After the run, there's a big raffle - mountain bikes, gift cards to restuarants and spas, turkeys, some really neat stuff. Your raffle ticket is your runner's "bib" number. So when the race is over, our boys hang around the parking lot and ask people who are leaving for their bibs. That way, they have several numbers in the raffle.

After the race, we stop at a local restaurant for breakfast (the boys and my husband, I can't eat knowing what's to come). When we get home, I start cooking the Thanksgiving dinner and the boys might go outside to play basketball on our cul-de-sac, or we'll go outside and chat with the neighbors. If the weather's nice, which it probably will be tomorrow since it was about 70 degrees and sunny today, we might take a walk down to the beach or take our dog into the sand dunes.

We usually eat around 4:00, just the four of us, and my husband and I will have a glass of wine. Not sure what my husband will eat this year since he turned vegan last year after his angioplasty. Later we'll have pumpkin pie and the boys will use half the whipped cream on one slice of pie and spray the other half directly in their mouths, and my husband will yell at them. Then we might settle in and watch a movie.

And I won't feel too guilty since I started my day with a 3-mile Turkey Trot!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

My daughter's school used to do a Turkey Trot all around town the day before Thanksgiving. She got to do it in 6th grade. (She came in 2nd, was thrilled.) She loved it. But then they abandoned it. Too competitive. Now they walk. Turkey walk? No one cares about it. Yours sounds like fun.

Carly, this 5K run is a little different from others in that they don't keep track of your time. Our school district also has a 5K in March and they do keep times and give awards to the top finishers. We didn't win anything in the raffle today, but it was a fun morning with beautiful sunny, warm weather.
