Halloween - The Perfect Holiday for a Demon

Today's guest is Scarlet Love, author of Demon Holiday.

Most people know that Halloween was originally a pagan holiday. On the ancient Celtic calendar, the year ended on the last day of October. (This was also the end of the harvest period.) They believed that on this night, the veil between this world and the otherworld was at its thinnest and the dead and living could thus communicate most easily then.

In the Middle Ages, people believed that departed souls would be abroad on this night. They might try to enter your house to steal your body. Originally, people would leave food for these spirits to placate them, but others would try to scare them off with jack o’lanterns. These practices may be the origin of our trick or treat custom. (If you didn’t leave a treat for the spirit, he might play a nasty trick.)

So if the spirits are abroad, what kind of mischief can they promote?

You can find out, in my short story, which is one of two stories in Demon Holiday.

Blurb: The demon in Demon Holidays is a sly one who goes out on Halloween looking for  - well, what do you think a demon would be looking for on a cold and dark night?

The angel he stumbles upon is perfect for his purposes, but she has her own ideas about what must be done on this night when the spirit world collides with the mortal world.

Sparks fly as they each wield their own powers, hoping to find a common ground.

Excerpt: Demon reached for the underside of Angel's breasts. “The clock has struck midnight,” he said, using a soft tone to sweeten his harsh message. “It’s Halloween. I could take the baby now, if you don’t agree to have sex with me.”

“Demon!” She whirled on him, eyes spitting her own brand of silver fire. “You’ll never touch me in this or any other world if you harm that baby!”

He grinned slowly, savoring her fury. The more she resisted, the sweeter her ultimate capitulation would be.

“I like that fierce side of you,” he said.

“I don’t like the mean side of you. Don’t threaten me, Demon. You can’t take the baby.”

“Oh, but I could. The veil between the human world and ours is at its thinnest on Halloween. It’s easy for me to reach through.”

“The days when you could get men to perform evil for you on Halloween are gone. We angels have worked hard with humans to de-fang that holiday.”

“You haven’t eliminated the ability of the spirits in our realm to move freely in the human world.”

“That’s exactly why I’m here! It’s the one day in the year I can have some influence over this baby’s fate! So go away, Demon. I don’t want you here.”

She stared him down, her gray eyes sparking determination into his. But she didn’t move when he placed his hands directly on her breasts. “You know,” he said, “it’s a terrible thing for an angel to lie.” He tried very hard not to smile.  ~~~

It's All about the Boots

Happy Thursday!

I hope your day is going as great as mine. I'm thrilled because I have finally found a costume for under $50.00. It's sort of an alien chick get-up with flight glasses and white go-go boots, which, I have to tell you, are quite awesome.

It's funny how a little costume accessory can change the way you feel about yourself. I hate costumes that are too tight--make me feel fat. I don't like costumes that are too short--make me feel like I'm showing off my undies, which is problematic because I might forget them and not be wearing any. I hate spending a lot of time and money on a costume because they're just supposed to be funny little things to wear and converse about before the party food comes out. However, I'm glad I took the time to find this gem and it's simply because of the boots.

Have you ever heard the song "These Boots were Made for Walkin'" by Nancy Sinatra? It was popular back in the 1960s and then then Austin Powers movies made it famous again. It was even better the second time around. Well, when I put on these white go-go boots, I could hear that song playing my head and I felt absolutely groovy, baby! Yeah, I still had the lumps and rolls the little alien-ish dress showed, and the weird aviator glasses made my eyes look three times bigger than they were, but all I could look at were the boots. They made my legs look terrific! I now realize the women in 1960s and 1970s probably used them as their secret weapon. No matter what you look like, put on a pair of white go-go boots and you suddenly look...SEXY!

Yep, one little pair of boots changed my whole outlook, and, as a result, I had a great time at the Halloween party I went to last week. We have another one tomorrow, and I can't wait to show off my new boots. They're kind of like that neat shirt you loved as a kid that you wanted to wear every day but your mother wouldn't let you. I even want to wear my boots to bed, and my DH seems eager for me to do so...but that's another story. :)

What's the coolest Halloween costume you ever wore or that you've ever seen? Please do share and have a safe and happy Halloween.

Happy Halloween!

Halloween Fun

I'm not really a Halloween person. I never could think up cool costumes, and it was always cold and sometimes snowy when I had to cart my kids around for trick or treating. And since my husband is a volunteer firefighter, more often than not, he was called out to put out leaf fires and clean up smashed pumpkins in the road. To me, it seemed Halloween had turned into a night when people could break the law and get away with it. So when I mentioned this year that I didn't like Halloween, my son turned to me in surprise. "But you go out every year!"

Okay, so for the past few years, my hubby and I have been going out with a group of friends, sometimes in some pretty elaborate costumes. Luckily, a few members of the group CAN think up cool costumes. We've won prizes several times and we did this year again. But to me, and I think to most of us, it's not Halloween we like, but the excuse to get together and do something a little crazy and have fun together. We've been lobsters and red Solo cups and pumpkins, and this year we were...road signs!

Here I am - Speed Limit 55

Hubby was the railroad crossing sign

Excerpt:

“What do you mean I’m going to be tied to a bed all night?” Kelly Long’s frantic words echoed in the sudden silence. Laughter burst out from the dozen or so friends and community members around her getting ready for the annual Halloween haunted house.

“Yeah, sorry. I know it will be kind of boring to just lie there.” Lisa grabbed her by the arm and led her through the large living room draped with cobwebs and spiders, bats and ghosts. “But hey, it’s got to be better than the pathetic way you’ve been spending your evenings lately.”

Her best friend knew her too well. Since her painful break-up with her last boyfriend, Kelly’s life had been reduced to lonely runs in the morning, a busy teaching schedule during the day and binge-watching old sit-coms at night. And doing a little bit of research she didn’t want anyone to know about.

Electric candles flickered from the corners of the room, giving it the perfect eerie atmosphere.

“But tied up? To a bed?” A deep, seductive voice whispered in her head, memories of the temptation she’d been so close to giving into. The temptation she’d run away from.

“Stop whining. It’s for a good cause.”

“I know that,” Kelly snapped, suddenly on edge. “The proceeds from the haunted house stock the food bank for months, but I thought I was going to be taking ticket money.”

“We added some more scary rooms to the house this year and had to shift around some volunteers.” Lisa, tall and thin in a black Elvira’s dress and teased black wig, nodded her head in the direction of the entryway of the old mansion where the ticket table was being set up. “Mabel Grimes volunteered to help. I couldn’t turn her away.” She lowered her voice to a whisper. “We need you in the damsel in distress room, Kels. Can you see Mabel struggling against her bonds and screaming for help in that gravelly, smoked-for-too-many-years voice of hers?”

Kelly didn’t answer her. Strange, forbidden tingles ran along her skin at the thought of her arms and legs being tied to bedposts, even in jest. She rubbed her wrist. She hadn’t felt this illicitly excited since she’d last seen…

No, she couldn’t think about Mason now. She’d never make it through this evening if she thought about his broad shoulders and shaved head. His deep, dark eyes staring down at her. His fingers wrapped around her wrists. His voice whispering those tempting words.

Oh, shit. She should have realized Mason would be around here somewhere. She whipped her head around but couldn’t pick him out among the ghosts and goblins and other masked creatures wandering about. He’d stand a head taller than most of the people here. Where was he?

As head of the Halloween fundraising committee, he was probably out coordinating all the different activities. The bonfire. The costume contest. The pumpkin carving and apple bobbing. And of course, the haunted house. She’d deal with it if she ran into him, but she wasn’t looking forward to the awkwardness that was sure to result.

She hadn’t seen him in weeks. Not since the night she broke things off with him. Kelly pushed away the memory of the stricken look on his face as she followed Lisa around the corner. It was probably better to be shut up in one of the rooms after all, rather than sit out here where everyone, especially Mason, would see her when they walked in the door. Maybe she could get through this evening without running into him at all.

Kelly’s heart pounded as Lisa led her up the long, steep staircase with its intricately carved spindles. The old Bartholomew mansion was the perfect venue for the haunted house, with its many rooms and dark, old-fashioned décor. There was a rumor that this house on the hill had been a bordello back in the old days.

“All you have to do is scream your head off whenever the door is opened,” Lisa was saying.

“What?”

Lisa sighed. “Pay attention, hon. I have to get everyone else set up too.”

“Sorry.”

“We’ll be taking groups through the house one at a time. They’ll have to wait their turn in the spider web room. Cool, huh? Dark and spooky, ya know?” Lisa glanced at Kelly over her shoulder with a big grin.

“Getting them into the mood.” Kelly was already spooked.

“Anticipation can be pretty powerful, especially in the right atmosphere.”

Kelly rubbed her wrist again.

Bound to Submit is Available Now!!

Just in time for Halloween!! It's release day for Bound to Submit!!! The erotic romance is now live on all your favorite vendor sites!

We have a few fund-raising haunted houses around here every year. I'm always too chicken to go to them. But I had fun shutting my two characters together where they had to start working out their problems.

Mason’s dark good looks and dominating personality stirred up Kelly’s forbidden fantasies, frightening her so much that she broke up with him. When she agrees to help out at the community haunted house, she never expects to be tied to a bed, playing damsel in distress to Mason’s masked, whip-wielding villain.

Mason knows Kelly is fighting her sexual needs and he hopes that a few hours of playing out her fantasies with him will prove it to her. Bound and under his control, she can’t run away from him this time.

Previously published as Nothing to Fear, but has been significantly revised and expanded.

The Best Costume Ever

What is it? Seriously. I need to know. I need ideas not only for myself, who plans on attending an awesome Halloween party with friends, but for one of my characters, who needs to dress up to infiltrate an All Saints Eve shindig to steal a diamond that contains an ancient secret no one knows exists except the heroine and her grandmother...or so they think.

So what does one wear to such an occasion? The fictional one, I mean. This chick's gotta slip in, grab the gem, and get out without seeming suspicious. Oh, and there are hunky guards searching everyone who comes and goes. Should she wear as little as possible to draw all attention her way and fool everyone into thinking she's somewhere when she's not? That would mean going as Lady Godiva or maybe Eve, as in Adam and. That could backfire, though, in that, well, where does she hide the diamond? Yeah, that's a problem.

The other option is that she dress as something very innocuous, something like a witch, vampire, cat, etc., to blend in. The problem is this is a very elite party where invitation-only guests take delight in trying to outdo each other in the best costume department, no matter what the cost. And why not? The host is offering a $1,000,000 cash prize for the most glorious costume. Rich and manipulative, he enjoys watching his vapid friends try to beat each other at such an inconsequential game. The truth is, he just picks a winner by a lottery drawing at the end of the night, but the drama that unfolds through the evening greatly entertains him. So the point is, my heroine couldn't just walk in as a zombie and get by with it, unless she taped real organs to her body or something. She's not going to do that, so she's going to need something extra special to blend in. But what?

I have that same problem. What do I wear this year for Halloween? No, nobody is offering a cash prize for the best costume, nor do my friends try to outdo each other. We just like to dress up to be silly and hang around telling stories of the good old days when we could all still eat our kids' Halloween candy and not worry about it sticking to our teeth or irritating our gall bladders.

Got any ideas? Last year I went as a cat,the same as the year before. I want to do something different, though still fun, but getting a costume together can be a major endeavor. I hate to buy a costume--although I did get my $20 worth out of the kitty costume--because they never fit right, and the really cute ones don't come in size Way Bigger Than Anyone Else Who Ever Wanted to Dress as Tinker Bell at Your Age. I know what I speak of here, as I have been searching Amazon for costumes. I'll dig through a ton of them until I find one and go, "Woo-hoo! It comes in extra large." Then I read the description and discover that not only it is made in a country that routinely adds broken glass to their export products for some unknown reason, but that the company's extra large is the equivalent to size 8-10. Really? In what species?

Any costume experts out there willing to share some free advice? If so, please comment with your ideas. And if you're looking for your own costume, I do have a nice used cat outfit you might be interested in. :)

Given my predilection for creepy erotica and erotic romance, it seems only fitting that I be scheduled to post on Halloween. I have a few treats to share with readers who like their erotica with a little bit of paranormal twist (WARNING: Some of my free stuff is very graphic and intended for mature audiences only).

For some reason, I really enjoy writing stories of  the extraordinarily odd and wonderfully wicked.  In fact, the short story that started my career, Grave Circumstance, is about a man who refuses to let anything stand in the way of being with his beloved, and I do many anything. It was so much fun to write because Oliver is so determined, the situation so extreme, and the setting of their tryst is a cemetery. I knew then that my writer's journey was going to be filled with more paranormal and psychologically challenged characters than regular types. It suited me just fine.

Don't get me wrong. I love writing stories with nary a willowy wisp of the wildly weird in them, and I do love my dragons. However, I have the most fun when I let my imagination play in the edgy, sketchy underside of humanity and non-so-human-ity. My free short story, Miss Witch, is a perfect example of the kind of erotic horror I enjoy writing, but if you really like more horror with a bit of the erotic in it, please enjoy the "lost" chapter of Seducing Gracie, which will be reprinted in December. The chapter wasn't actually lost, but more like revised out because the editor didn't feel like it fit with the book. Still, it's a scary read, if you like that kind of thing like I do. ;)

One of my latest releases, The Snow Job, is less creepy and more cheeky. When Para Marshall Marina Fareeky plans the ultimate sting operation to capture the head of the Nicholas vampyre clan, she ends up walking down the aisle into the arms of one very tempting paranormal fugitive, one who has been hunting her with the intent to make her his own...forever. Will she survive her wedding night? Will she find her soul mate in the form of a sexy vampyre?

The Snow Job has been one of my favorites because it was my first attempt at writing a vamp story. Aleksi is gloriously proud and stubborn, and Marina has no patience for lawbreakers, so their chemistry was great fun to script. I hope if you get a chance to read it that you think so, too.

I hope whether you're reading or trick or treating this Halloween, that it's safe and happy. Enjoy!

Guest: Scarlet Love - Demon Holidays

What's a better holiday for a demon than Halloween?

Halloween is the word that comes down to us from All Hallows Eve, which is the night when spirits were believed to be abroad. Apparently, they could cross over from their world to ours on this one night of the year.

To keep these spirits from trashing their homes, people would leave out offerings of food or whatever they thought might please the ghosts. If you didn't want the spirit to play a nasty 'trick' on you, you'd give them a 'treat'.

Hence, trick or treating!
In thinking about these ghosts sneaking around on Halloween, a demon came to me and whispered his story in my ear. I've written down his tale in Demon Holidays

My demon in Demon Holidays is a sly one who goes out on Halloween looking for  - well, what do you think a demon would be looking for on a cold and dark night?

The angel he stumbles upon is perfect for his purposes, but she has her own ideas about what must be done on this night when the spirit world collides with the mortal world.

Sparks fly as they each wield their own powers, hoping to find a common ground.

Excerpt: Demon reached for the underside of Angel's breasts. “The clock has struck midnight,” he said, using a soft tone to sweeten his harsh message. “It’s Halloween. I could take the baby now, if you don’t agree to have sex with me.”

She stared him down, her gray eyes sparking determination into his. But she didn’t move when he placed his hands directly on her breasts. “You know,” he said, “it’s a terrible thing for an angel to lie.” He tried very hard not to smile.

A White Halloween

I know, how odd that it looks like a white Christmas here when it is actually Halloween, right? I had to share some of the pics I took yesterday when we rode our ATV in the beautiful snow we had here in NC up the side of a mountain and along another road. It was definitely a winter wonderland!

We don't usually have snow this early but this is off Hurricane Sandy. I was so sad to see the devastation in the north east. I hope all of you, your families and homes are okay or that you will bounce back soon. I'm thinking of you.

Best wishes for a happy Halloween!

P.S. My book, My Fierce Highlander is an Epic Award Finalist in historical romance!

P.P.S. My story, My Brave Highlander takes place in a winter wonderland also, in the icy north of Scotland during November.

Battle-hardened warrior Dirk MacLerie isn't who everyone thinks he is. He's Dirk MacKay, heir apparent to the MacKay chiefdom and Dunnakeil Castle on the far north coast of Scotland. When he returns home after a long absence, will his clan know him and will the duplicitous enemy who tried to murder him twelve years ago kill him in truth this time?

Lady Isobel MacKenzie is a beautiful young widow betrothed to yet another Highland chief by her brother's order. But when her future brother-in-law accosts her and threatens to kill her, she is forced to flee into a Highland snowstorm. When she runs into a rugged and imposing man she thought dead, she wonders if he will turn her over to her enemy or take her to safety.

Dirk remembers the enchanting, dark-eyed Isobel from when he was a lad, but now she is bound to another man by legal contract—an important detail she would prefer to forget. She wishes to choose her own husband and has her sights set on Dirk. But he would never steal another man's bride… would he? The tantalizing lady fires up his passions, testing his willpower and honor at every turn, even as some of his own treacherous clansmen plot his downfall.

In the Dark

I sometimes wonder if I haven’t read too many books. But how can one read too much? How can that be a bad thing?

Well, the other morning I started to wonder if it was, and I’m sure my hubby was thinking the same thing, because he had to sort of rescue me. I started out to my car, which is parked in a garage, and halted at the door. Something wasn’t quite right. It seemed very dark for some reason, and it took me a moment to figure out what was missing. Then it registered…

The light was out.

Now, a normal person would simply pull out her cell phone, the glow of which could be seen on Mars, and head out, darkness be damned. I, however, hesitated, my zoetrope of scenarios whirring away in my adrenaline-fueled imagination. Every book I’ve ever read where a person starts to go somewhere and a light is out, yet the person continues forward, has ended badly for the person. Naturally, then, my mind spun with the possibilities. The most logical was that the light bulb to the garage door light had gone out—plain, simple, boring. However, logic has never been my strong suit, so I immediately veered from “logical” to “What if?” and finally to “better safe than sorry.”

In other words, because I wasn’t sure that someone or something with murderous intentions wasn’t hiding in my garage and hadn’t unscrewed the light bulb in my garage’s overhead light, my husband ended up standing at the door to make sure I made it twenty feet to the safety of my little car (that, if a fly farted in it the right way, would fly into pieces on the highway).

This is how I think, but I can’t be the only one. How many times have you read a book in which the lights had been knocked out on purpose so some nefarious bad-doer could engage in a variety of bad doings? And what happens then? That’s right—some dorky secondary (or thirdary) character like the expendable, red-shirted Star Trek guys blunders across a serial killer or a mob hit man or a mummy or a mutant hedgehog with revenge on its mind, and that’s the last time he’s ever seen with all his body parts in one location.

So, with my imagination working in overdrive, I woke my hubby up to watch me to my car, just in case something sinister was at hand. To his credit, he stumbled to the door with me without question, the only statement he made being, “No one could get in our garage. It’s secure.” To which I replied, “What if some alien life-form transformed itself into something that could slither under the wall or through the window into the garage and wait for me?”

Still patient, he sighed and threw his man logic at me: “If the alien life form had the skills to transform itself to slither into the garage, it certainly wouldn’t need to have it pitch dark to attack you.”

Touchè.

But this is how I think and Hubby knows it, so he watched me safely to my car before locking up and ambling off back to sleepyland, probably wondering why his flake-o-meter hadn’t picked up on my peculiarities before the wedding.

He was right, of course. There wasn't anything in the garage except me, my car, and my wild imagination. The next day he asked me if I wanted him to accompany me to the garage again, but I declined. I used my cell phone to guide me through the dark, and, once again, I made it to my car just fine.

Or maybe not just fine, because I still wonder if I don't read too much--too many mysteries, too many thrillers, too much horror, too much intrigue. Hmmm...

Nah. lol

Hope your Halloween is happy and safe. If you're looking for a bit of scary erotic romance for this creepy season, please check out Seducing Gracie from Changeling Press. Then you'll understand...muhahahahaha!
