Guest: Alexa Bourne - Celtic Connection

Please welcome our special guest for today, Alexa Bourne!

Alexa Bourne is a teacher by day and a romance writer by nights, weekends, and all school holidays. She also teaches online classes for writers throughout the year. She writes mostly romantic suspense (some with paranormal elements!) and is thrilled to have the chance to share her stories with readers everywhere.

When she’s not concocting sinister plots and steamy love scenes or traveling and exploring new cultures, Alexa spends her time reading, watching brainless TV, and thinking about exercising. Okay, she also spends way too much time interacting with readers and writers on social media sites. But don’t tell her editors! Find out more about her and her books on her website, www.alexabourne.com.

My grandmother’s family came from Scotland and my grandfather’s came from Ireland, so I guess I was always destined to have wisps of the Celts floating through my mind and my heart. Anyone who knows me can tell you how much the Celtic world has invaded my life. My website has plaid, I have a plaid purse, I have several earrings of various Celtic symbols. Friends and family send me gifts related to Ireland and Scotland for my birthday, Christmas and even St. Patrick’s Day. I listen to Celtic music, travel to Celtic countries, study some Celtic history, read some Celtic romance novels and I’ve even written contemporary romance novels set in Celtic lands.
So when my muse demanded I set my newest book in Texas, I was a little…lost. I knew the story wouldn’t be successful if I tried to force it into Dublin, Edinburgh or the Scottish Highlands. I had to just “get over it” and recognize that this book wouldn’t be tied to my Celtic roots.
But…

As I wrote the rough draft, some of the characters’ names turned out to be Scottish or Irish. And when it came time to choose a symbol to represent The Protectors, the “good guys” in the series, the Celtic shield settled inside my brain. I even started thinking that if all goes well with this set of 4 books, then I could continue the series and set the next round of books in Scotland since I’ll be traveling there next summer and can do more research. While these connections raced through my mind, I began thinking of my other books. Soon I realized that every one of them has something Celtic within its pages. So, I guess no matter where I set my stories or what the plots are, my love of Scotland and Ireland will always shine through.
Hear My Cry: Harper Monroe has simple goals— work her day job, pay off her debts, and finish college. But life rarely goes as planned. When two lunatics spouting off weird phrases attempt to kidnap her, Harper’s world turns upside down and she loses her hearing.
All bartender Scott Jackson wants after work is his couch, a Longhorn game, and a cold beer. Instead, he reluctantly becomes Harper’s protector. As the two of them work to find out why she’s wanted, Harper’s hearing returns. Only now she can hear everything.
With more research, they discover Harper is a member of The Protector Cell, a secret society of men and women with superpowers. Harper refuses to accept her fate until The Collectors, the people hunting the Protectors, make her their number one target. Suddenly, Harper must choose: deny her frightening future or use her new skill to save the man she loves.

Excerpt!

Harper squeezed her eyes shut and pinched the bridge of her nose. What if she never heard another sound again?
A gentle hand brushed along her arm. Warmth seeped through the palm. Heat wasn’t what she needed, though. Did the person have any courage to share?
She opened her eyes. Gone was the stern looking doctor. Only her hero stood before her, with a soft glance of concern covering his features. Of course he hadn’t grown since she met him, but somehow he seemed taller, wider, more of a force to be reckoned with. Yet, he still held onto a boy-next-door look. His dirty-blond hair held streaks from where he’d run his fingers through it. The strands fell below the standard male cut, but still didn’t reach his broad shoulders. Across his chest stretched a black t-shirt decorated with the words The Stone Shelter Pub. From her few visits to the bar, she knew it was the shirt the staff wore.
He pointed to her. Once he gave her the hand signal for okay, he held his hand out as though waiting for an answer.
Her all right? She had a couple who wanted to grab her, to use her as a test subject. Defending herself completely healthy was hard enough. With no hearing, she might as well put a sign on her back that read take me, I’m at a tactical disadvantage.
But she couldn’t tell that to an innocent stranger.
A slim smile was all she could give him. “I will be.” She had to be, right?
He reached behind him to the table to grab the notepad and pen. Don’t be scared, okay? Since there’s nothing physically wrong with you then it stands to reason you’ll be able to hear again soon.
He’d written the message, but Harper could see the doubt rumbling through his eyes.
When she pulled her gaze away, it fell on the bandage covering part of his forearm. An injury he wouldn’t have gotten if he had walked away. A knot clutched in her stomach. “What’s your name?”
Scott Jackson.
“Thank you for saving my life.” The admission brought a whole new wave of worry.
You were doing pretty good on your own.
With a light touch of her pinkie, she traced the tape around his bandage. “I’m sorry you got hurt because of me.”
He shook his head. You didn’t burn my arm. There’s no reason for you to apologize.
“But if I hadn’t stopped you…”
He held up one finger, close to her mouth but not touching. She pressed her lips together, and then he continued writing. My choice.
Rich green eyes stared back at her with strength and pride. Moisture gathered in the corners of Harper’s eyes. When she’d called out to him for help she hadn’t wanted him hurt. For her. “I’m so sorry.”
He brushed away the tears before they fell down her cheeks.
She knew it wasn’t fair, wasn’t right, but she didn’t want him to leave her alone. With his soft touch, his straightforward words, and his ability to hear, Scott Jackson was the only person who made her feel safe at the moment.

Q: Welcome back, Alexa! Please tell us about your latest release.
A: Carry Me Home came out June 2nd. It’s a contemporary romance set in the Highlands of Scotland. Here’s the blurb:
After six months in the city, Mary MacDougall returns to the Scottish Highlands to finalize her divorce. Because of a past tragedy, she doubts her husband Jamie can possibly love her with the same unbridled passion as before and insists ending the marriage is best for both of them. But Jamie has other ideas…. Jamie MacDougall has no intention of letting his bonnie lass go. At least not without a fight. Aye, they’ve suffered heartache, and she may be ready to call it quits, but he refuses to throw away the partnership they’ve built since they were children. Instead, he’ll remind her they were meant to be together, forever. Can this marriage survive pride and grief to allow love to carry them home?

Sounds wonderful! Do you have a review you could share with us?

The first review I received was from a writer whose work I love and respect, Jan Hudson. When I read her words, I actually had tears stinging the corners of my eyes. Why? See for yourself:
If you love all things Scottish, as I do, you’ll love Carry Me Home, Alexa Bourne's new Tease (a short read) from Decadent Publishing. It’s rare that a book actually brings me to tears and even more rare that I can both laugh and cry in the same book, but this deeply moving story of a couple on the verge of ending their marriage did just that. Mary MacDougall returns to Glenhalish, her hometown, with divorce papers in hand and determined to get Jamie, her brawny, red-haired Scot to sign them. Even though the sight of him awakens powerful feelings and his touch…well, she’s convinced that their marriage is over, and she wants to be done with it and get on with her new start in Edinburgh. But Jamie, stubborn man that he is, refuses to let go of the love of his life and begs for a weekend to prove that they can work things out. Can he prove that he can change? Can they overcome the pain of the past and rekindle their soul-deep love for each other? This is a must read!

Q: What inspired this story?
A: Actually, the main characters in this story were secondary characters in my very 1st book, Her Highland Champion. I knew, at the time, that Jamie and Mary had more to tell me. BUT it wasn’t until my senior editor asked me to join the new Decadent Tease line that their story started to evolve.
Q: I remember them from the first book and look forward to reading this one. What is the story behind the story?
A: I wrote this story in 3 weeks. I worked my day job, went home and wrote for an hour at a time from about 4pm until 11pm or midnight most weekdays. During the weekends, I would get up about 8am and write an hour at a time until 11 or midnight (and sometimes later).  I stopped to have fast food meals and to occasionally go out to buy peanut M&Ms and Cokes. I had trouble at times, but then I would play the Selah song I Will Carry You, which helped me get to the heart of the story and bring Jamie and Mary to their happily-ever-after. It was the most intense writing experience I’ve ever had and I honestly feel this is one of my best stories ever.
Q: Wow! That's amazing! Please tell us about your favorite character in the book.
A: My favorite character is actually Jamie’s little sister, Meggie. She’s outspoken and sometimes annoying, but she means well. She’s such an amazing character that she now hosts the Glenhalish community blog on my website! AND her story is my next Tease release, Silent Surrender.
Q: Please tell us about your other books.
A: Well, like I said, Meggie MacDougall’s story, Silent Surrender, is my next Tease story. At the moment, I have also submitted the 3rd MacDougall sibling’s story to my publisher for consideration. (Fingers crossed they want Ewan’s story as well!) All 3 stories are set in my fictional version of Glenfinnan, Scotland.
I also have 3 romantic suspense novellas set in the UK. They are also contemporary and revolve around the fictional bodyguard agency, International Protective network (IPN). You can learn more about the IPN books on my website.
Q: What is your writing process or method?
A: I usually start with a scene idea or a character. I write the rough draft by hand and out of sequence, and that’s where I learn the plot. In the 2nd draft, I add more detail and start to organize the scenes as I type everything up on the computer. In the 3rd, 4th and sometimes 5th drafts, I’m revising and adding more depth to each scene and character. I usually figure out the entire plot details and character conflicts (to the point they all come together) when I’m on the last revising draft. Finally, I usually read the story out loud to catch any last minute grammar or word issues.
Q: What do you wish you’d known before becoming published?
A: How difficult promotion is! I love a lot of aspects of promotion, but it’s constant work and I often second-guess whether I’m doing the best I can.
You're doing great! Thanks so much for being with us today, Alexa. We wish you the best of luck with your new book!

Guest: Alexa Bourne - Her Highland Champion & Book Giveaway

Alexa Bourne is a teacher by day and a romantic suspense writer by nights, weekends, and all school holidays. She also teaches online classes for writers throughout the year. Alexa's new book is Her Highland Champion.

A Decadent Honor Guard story….
Heather Winchester leads a charming life. With good friends, a beautiful flat in one of the most amazing cities in the world, and a promising future once she finishes her Ph.D, she is finally pursuing her own dreams instead of catering to everyone else’s…except she doesn’t remember any of it.
Malcolm Fraser has returned to his Highland village to forget his failings as a professional bodyguard. Believing he could just lose himself in the mundane activities of running his bed & breakfast, he finds a woman’s lifeless body by the loch instead….
Captivated by Heather as she regains her memory, Malcolm is thrown into the line of duty. As danger comes knocking on their door, will he be strong enough to love her and keep her safe?

Q: Welcome, Alexa! What inspired Her Highland Champion?
A:  A visit to the village of Glenfinnan in the Highlands of Scotland inspired this story. I was on vacation in Scotland and wanted to go to Glenfinnan because it was the birthplace of the character Connor MacLeod of the Highlander movie. Once I got there, I was amazed by the beauty of the place.
Q: Scotland is very inspiring. What is the story behind the story?
A:  I wrote this story and started submitting it to agents and publishers in 1999, when I knew nothing about writing. I mean, I had 2 heroes, knew nothing about point of view, motivation and all those other terms. But I had so much fun writing it, I kept it and vowed to go back to it once I knew more. Fast forward 12 years. My friend Camryn Rhys suggested I submit to her publisher because they were starting a new line called the Honor Guard Series, which incorporated international settings, local flavor and alpha heroes. I pulled the story (and its 2 heroes!) out from under the bed, revised it (and chose 1 hero) and submitted it last November. Three weeks later, I got the contract.
Q: What do you enjoy most about writing romantic suspense?
A:  I love seeing the good guys win, the bad guys get what’s coming to them and seeing my main characters rise to the challenges and grow.
Q: How do you choose names for your characters?
A: LOL! I don’t believe I choose their names. I believe they let me know what works for them. A few times my characters have “suggested” names and I’ve tried to change them, but in the end, the characters ALWAYS win.
Q: LOL That's so cool! Where is your favorite place in the world?
A: Scotland is my absolute favorite place in the world. Whenever I’m there, I’m calm, relaxed and happy.
Q: I feel the same way! Please tell us about your favorite character in the book.
A: My favorite character is actually a secondary character, Jamie MacDougall. He’s the pub manager in my fictional village of Glenhalish. He’s a giant of a man with a good heart! He doesn’t trust easily, but he’s fiercely loyal and will do whatever he can for those he cares about.
Q: What is your writing process or method?
A: I write a rough draft within 1-2 months (depending on the story). Then I plot. J Next comes revising, which entails choosing one major focus per draft (I do 4-6 drafts per book), such as figuring out the sequence of events, making sure the suspense unfolds correctly and realistically, adding more details.
Q: Wow that's interesting. What do you wish you’d known before becoming published?
A: I’m absolutely amazed with how much time promotion work takes. It’s interesting and fun, but so very time-consuming. Finding a balance with my “real world”, my writing and promoting I can tell will be a constant struggle for me.
Q: That's true. Do you have any advice for unpublished authors?
A: If you want it badly enough, don’t give up. It took 12 years from submitting my very first (crappy) manuscript to receiving my very first contract.
Q: What’s next for you?
A: I’m waiting to hear whether my publisher wants my second novella. The hero in that one is the 2nd hero from my very first suspense. (Fingers crossed!) I also have a full-length manuscript out on submission. While waiting to hear back on those, I’ll be revising another full-length story that got requested.
Fantastic! Best of luck with all your projects! Thanks for being our guest today! Do you have a question for readers?
