Romance By The Book

I’m a member of the Los Angeles Romance Authors chapter of RWA, and this year, instead of holding the usual contest as a chapter fundraiser, our members decided to try something different and – hopefully – unique.

Eighteen published and unpublished members contributed twenty-two stories to an anthology called 5 Minute Love Stories, a collection of short stories exploring the many sides of love – love in the traditional sense as well as love in broader terms, love of family, love of a pet, etc.

The idea behind it was that in our busy lives, sometimes we just need a few minutes to relax and escape the world. So we thought we’d invite you fall in love…5 minutes at a time.

My story is called Romance By The Book, and it’s a definite departure from my usual sexy romances. It’s the sweet story of how one man discovers what women really want in a relationship, by reading romance novels the local librarian recommends. And – you guessed it – the two fall in love, literally, by the book J

What do you think of our chapter fundraiser idea? Is it fun/unique? Does it tempt you to buy the book and possibly discover a new favorite author? The anthology went up for sale just before Valentine’s Day on amazon, B&N, and Smashwords. I’ll let you know how it does!

Best,
Leigh

  1. It was fun doing the anthology - really stretched my creativity to only have 1500 words to work with instead of the usual 60,000 to 80,000 LOL. But I got ancient Egypt in my story anyway! Really enjoyed yours!!!

  4. So far I've read two of the stories, and I thoroughly enjoyed both. I am working my way through the book from page one, one free moment at a time!

LARA has a wide range of talented authors, and we all need to grab a few moments to escape with a cup of coffee and a good read.
And who can beat that price!

Looking forward to working my way to your contribution.

  6. I've already finished the Anthology! Okay, yes, I could skip the first two stories, since I wrote 'em, but still...I ate the whole thing up in one sitting and found it as yummy as the cupcakes on the cover. The stories run the gamut from sweet to heartmelting to fun to sexy to SEXXXY!!

There is something for everyone. :)

  9. I've also finished the anthology. I planned to read one or two stories per night but it was like starting a box of chocolates where you think, just one more. I loved trying to guess who had written the story just by knowing the voice and the style/genre...I got a couple right. ; )

  10. Writing the anthology was fun - reading it even better.

By the Book was very sweet, and I pictured it going down in my own neighborhood.

  11. I think the anthology is a fabulous idea for a fund raiser.

I've read all the stories, and I am amazed at the variety of subject matter and the way love was interpreted.

The biggest plus for me was that I could read a story or two in just a few minutes. Great job LARA!
