Wines and Trains and Rain, Oh My!

OK, so the weather could have been better. My hubby and I made plans months ago with friends to take a train ride (hubby is a train buff) to a local winery (we're all wine buffs), complete with lunch and music and, of course, wine. Unfortunately, the day was cold and rainy, with the temps never getting out of the 40s.

While there was heat on the train, it didn't seem to reach my feet. All five passenger cars were filled with people who enjoyed a good train ride, a good glass of wine, or both. But it was quickly apparent that we had a cross-section on humanity on board. Pleasant people. Pushy people. Complainers and helpful people. The cold, wet weather didn't really help anyone's disposition.

The first stop on the train ride was the Medina Railroad Museum. It's the largest freight depot museum in the country and is packed with not only historic artifacts and charming memorabilia from the heyday of the railroad, but a huge working model railroad layout. Train and history enthusiasts would love it there.

After the museum, we headed to Spring Lake Winery for lunch and music. The tents were heated and served us very well while we ate lunch and sampled the wines. Please excuse the blurriness of the pictures, I might have been shivering just a little waiting in line for our chicken and potato salad.

We were entertained with the excellent Billy McEwen Band, a rhythm and blues band from western New York. But the best part of the trip was spending time with friends. And yes, the wine was very good.

In fact, everyone's disposition seemed to improve after a glass or two of wine. People who seemed a bit grumpy on the train ride out, were downright cheerful on the trip back.

Who cared about the weather?

Despite the weather, sounds like y'all had a great time. My husband and I always take time to experience the Rocky Top Wine Trail in Gatlinburg, TN. In fact, we have reservations in November.

Ooh, Savannah, I'll have to check that out. I'm going to be at a conference in Gatlinburg next June.

LOL, Carly. I don't mind a train ride if there's wine at the end of it :)
