Dark Moments

Am I the only masochist here? Is there anyone else who delights in agonizing the whole time they’re reading a romance, waiting for the train wreck they know is going to happen? Tell me I’m not the only who actually enjoys the stomach clenching and the hollow sadness you get when you’re afraid it’s never going to work.

My husband actually walks out of the room during the dark moments of the movies we watch. He hates them. I love them. And as much as I love reading them and watching them, I love writing them even more. Hmm, I guess that makes me a sadist too!

But we know it’s going to work out. That’s what makes us love romance. That’s why I can look forward to the agony our characters will go through. Because it’s all worth it!

I love the dark moments because only with that trial by fire can our characters come out stronger on the other side. Only then can we know they’ve forged a bond strong enough to last “ever after.”

So do you like the dark moments? Please tell me I'm not alone.

I have to say I'm more like your husband. I don't like to be anxious. But the resolution is definitely sweeter after a major dark moment. It's got to be there for most people I think.

Hi Carly!

That's why I love romance, I know it will turn out okay. If I didn't know that, I'd hate being anxious too.

I love the dark moment too. I like getting all anxious over something I'm reading or watching and then getting that whew, what a ride feeling at the end. I love it!

Wonderful post! I love dark moments too! If I don't cry when I'm writing it then I know I've done something wrong. :)
