Fairy Glen - a magical place
Fairy Glen on Isle of Skye (above) was even more beautiful and magical than I expected.

All of my published novellas so far have included magic in some form--either a witch wielding dark magic and turning men into shapeshifters, or a magical amulet which brings lovers together. In addition, my latest sale, a novella to Harlequin's Carina Press, is a paranormal historical fairy tale.

Laird of Darkness: In hushed whispers, they call him the Laird of Darkness. Duncan MacDougall is a tormented half-Fae Highland chief with amazing abilities. Because Otherworld demons torture him in his sleep, he would do anything to acquire the magical Dealanach bow, the solution to his problem, even if it means taking his enemy’s future bride hostage.

Magical healer Lady Alana Forbes has never met her betrothed, but when his enemy half-brother kidnaps her and spirits her away to his castle’s tower bedchamber, she isn’t sure she wants to meet any other man. Though Duncan’s actions proclaim him an outlaw, she sees beneath his troubled surface. When he tries to allay her fears in the darkness, comfort turns to erotic seduction.

Has Duncan destroyed his chance at acquiring the bow? Does he still want the bow, or would he rather keep Alana? Will he end up with neither after his enemy attacks?

Laird of Darkness is scheduled to be released in March.

Even though this story isn't set in Fairy Glen or on Isle of Skye, I was keen to explore the amazing and beautiful site. And I was thrilled the weather was nice so we could do a bit of hiking.

Fairy Glen is said to be Scotland in miniature. There's a wee loch, wee conical shaped fairy hills, and a small cliff that looks like a castle ruin at the top. It is truly a charming place with a happy feeling.
We walked up a hill which gave us a lovely view of a waterfall in the opposite direction. Then we hiked up toward the small cliff which gave us wonderful views down toward the loch. Now I find this place is haunting me and I must go back!

Did you ever visit a place that evoked a magical feeling or simply a feeling of great happiness?
Thanks for stopping by!

  1. What impressed me was how high this was! It doesn't look like it from the pictures, but we were up HIGH! :)

  2. Nicole North Says:

Yes, that's true. It could be because you're used to flat land. ?? :) I wish we could've had time to walk all the way to the top where the cliff is and around the back side.

  3. I do too. The Fairy Glen with its unassuming beauty was one of the loveliest places we visited. LOL about the flat land comment. Waco actually has hilly areas, but unfortunately where I live, the only hills I have are fire ant mounds. :(

But I loved how easy it was to climb the hills. Just beautiful.

Great pictures, as always. I so want to go there! Seriously, you are getting me thinking.

Your story sounds like fun. I don't think I knew you sold to Carina. Congratulations!

  5. Nicole North Says:

I agree it was one of the most beautiful places we visited.

LOL about the fire ant mounds! Those are the kind of hills I don't like.

  6. Nicole North Says:

Thanks Carly!! I'm thrilled with the sale to Carina!

I'm sure you would love Isle of Skye and Fairy Glen, especially if the weather is as great as it was that day. It's a very natural, beautiful place.

  7. Linda Kage Says:

I can even feel the majestic magic merely from the picturs. Thanks for sharing. I've never been somewhere so neat myself, unless you count Mt. Rushmore, but it was so far away I really couldn't get the whole, impressive feel of it.

  8. Absolutely gorgeous pictures Nicole! OMG, its calling to me too! I need to go!!! Thanks for sharing!

  9. Oh, wow. It's enchanting, isn't it? Lovely pics. Lovely place. Gotta add this to my places to visit.

  10. Nicole, what lovely photos. I can see why this spot spoke to you so vividly. I had an experience like that summer before last, when I visited Dunguaire Castle, in Galway, Ireland. An Irish friend of mine had identified it for me as the castle on my first novel, In Sunshine or in Shadow, so naturally I had to visit. And when I got there, it felt almost as if I'd always known the place, as if it were a part of me.

    Lovely, Nicole...simply lovely!

  12. What breathtaking scenery! Here's to the stories it's sure to inspire. And all the best with your latest, Nicole.

  13. Nicole North Says:

Linda, I'd love to visit Mount Rushmore someday and several those beautiful mountains in the west!

  14. Nicole North Says:

Andrea, Thanks! I hope you get to visit Fairy Glen. You'd love it I'm sure.

  15. Nicole North Says:

Thanks Carol! Yes, I found it incredibly enchanting. I could've stayed there all day.

  16. Gorgeous, Nicole. When I saw the larger photo of the waterfall, all I could see was the shape of a heart. It gave me chills. I am so glad you had such a great time and have shared your trip with us.

One of my moving places was Balqhuidder where Rob Roy MacGregor and his family are buried. I can still feel the impact of the cemetery and the scenery around it. It is a must return to visit place. :)

  17. Nicole North Says:

Cynthia, thanks! Wow that is so neat about Dunguaire Castle. I love experiencing connections like that.

  18. Nicole North Says:

Thanks so much, Donna! I'm glad you enjoyed the pics!

  19. Nicole North Says:

Thanks, Pat! It was indeed inspiring! :)

  20. Nicole North Says:

Paisley, thanks! I didn't notice the heart shape until you mentioned it. How neat! I'm glad you visited a place that moved you profoundly. I think we passed by Rob Roy's grave and saw a sign for it but didn't have time to stop. Hopefully next time.

  21. Maeve Says:

Oh my! I could just disappear in Fairy Glen and never come back out. It's lovely. *sigh*

  22. I visited the fairy glen with my daughter this summer. It's such an amazing place that I decided I have to work it into one of my books.

We wouldn't have found it without good directions. If it was marked from the main road, I didn't see the sign.

It was wonderful to see your photos and be reminded of my trip. Thanks!

    Margaret

  23. Nicole North Says:

It sure is, Maeve! It has amazing natural, and unspoiled beauty.

  24. Nicole North Says:

I can see why, Margaret. It's a very inspiring and unique place! Likely most every writer who visits it will be drawn to write about it. :)

I don't think it was marked. I had to research the exact location. Glad you enjoyed the pics!

  25. I'v been to the Isle of Sky twice and didn't see Fairy Glen. Hey, that means I should go back to Scotland, doesn't it? Yay!

    Thanks for sharing.

  26. Beautiful pictures. Thank you so much for sharing. I give you credit for actually coming home. I don't think I could do it.

  27. Nicole North Says:

Caroline, absolutely! That means you have a great reason to go back!

  28. Nicole North Says:

Thanks, Victoria! It was difficult to come home, I admit! Am already trying to figure out how and when I can go back. LOL

  29. Wow, what a great post and what fantastic scenery. Thanks for sharing.

  30. Nicole North Says:

Miriam, thanks tons!! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

  31. (Sorry I'm late!)

    Gorgeous pics, Nicole!

After seeing your pics here, my desire to visit Scotland has grown tremendously.

  32. Nicole North Says:

Thanks! Hope you get to go, Casey! You'll love Scotland! :)
