Hot Summer Reading

I can feel it in the air. I can almost taste it. Summer is right around the corner. I'm eating peaches and nectarines and strawberries. I'm wearing sandals (OK, in So Cal I can wear sandals almost any time of the year!). The kids are bringing home less and less homework. Summer also means I have more time for reading.

Hopefully, everyone else has more time for reading too, since I'll have three books out this summer. The first to arrive is my novella, Hot on Her Heels, in Secrets Volume 24 due in July. The second is my Harlequin Intrigue, A Doctor-Nurse Encounter (written as Carol Ericson), coming out on Aug. 12. And my third release is an e-story, "Sex and the Single Pearl," which will be available from eRed Sage in August as well. As the release date for each book draws closer, I'll blog about each story and give some behind-the-scenes info about each.

For what's on my summer reading list, I just picked up Susan Elizabeth Phillips' Natural Born Charmer in paperback. I'm thinking of saving that one for Maui in August (if I can wait that long). I'm also looking forward to Eloisa James' Duchess by Night, the third book in her Desperate Duchesses series, which should be out any day now. I also have a long list of e-stories to read from my fellow Red Sage authors and the authors in my online goals group.

Do you read more or less in the summer? Do family vacations and picnics and barbecues slice into your reading time? Or do you spend time at the beach or on the plane with a book? What's on your summer reading list?

Hi Carol,
The only books I've taken time to read lately is Jenny Gardiner's, Sleeping With Ward Cleaver, which is hilarious. I also read Carla Cassidy's Intrigue, With the Material Witness in the Safehouse. She's always good.

Next, I want to read Barry Eisler's latest espionage book since he's a my space friend.

Hi Sandy, I'm putting Jenny's book on my list too. So many books, so little summer.

Hi, Mia!

I read more books when the weather is colder. In warmer weather I'm out and about more, and it seems summertime brings a lot of outdoor activities I can't resist :) I've never read a book at the beach. When I'm near the sand and surf, it's all about swimming and people observation/future character research :) But I truly enjoy curling up in bed or on the couch with a book. This is a great way to relax and immerse myself in the worlds created by some of my favorite authors. At present I've lots of books on my to-be-bought list :)

Hi Shawna, I guess that's the thing about living in a warm climate - we're out and about all year long. I typically don't read at the beach either because I usually go with a few other parents and a ton of boys! We're busy socializing while we keep one eye on the ocean. But summer gives me more free time because there's no school/homework/projects/concerts/field trips and no soccer/basseball/basketball practices and games. That all keeps me hopping. Before kids, I used to love to read at the beach. I'd ride my bike down to the beach, pick a spot on the sand, and settle down with a paperback. Love to read at the pool too. Heck, I just love sitting in the sun and reading with a Diet Coke by my side. I told my husband this would be my ideal retirement. He just rolled his eyes!

Great topic, Carol. I read a lot during the winter, this spring, not so much. I want to get back on track this summer. I have two RITA finalist books on my TBR pile (Lessons of Desire, Madeline Hunter and See No Evil, Allison Brennan). I've also got an Eppie finalist, Liquid Hypnosis by Tina Lavon on the stack. Then I just got a brand new rom susp., Run Among Thorns by Anna Louise Lucia. Yeah, some reading by the pool is definitely in order. Happy Summer!

Now that school is out (Woohoo!), I'll be reading more. I've got quite a few books on the TBR pile. But for my vacation, I'm taking along The Trouble With Paradise by Jill Shalvis. I know I'll take a few more, but I'm not sure what yet.

Great post, Mia! I can't wait to get this new Secrets volume. That will for sure be hot summer reading. Also on my list are the other Fierce authors with books being released. Various other Scottish historicals and time travels. Right now I'm reading a contemporary by Rachel Gibson. She's one of my favs.

Hi Amy, I've had my eye on Liquid Hypnosis too. Maybe next summer YOUR GH finaling book will be on someone's summer TBR pile (I know it will be on mine!).

Lexi, enjoy your summer off and all the good reading.

Nicole, I can't wait to get my hands on the new Secrets volumes either! This time I only got my proof. For Vol. 21 I got everyone's proof along with mine and so got a preview copy of everyone else's stories.

Hi Mia! I read more in the summer because in Texas summer means staying inside most of the time, unfortunately! I'm very sensitive to the sun. Books I want to read are all of the writers of this blog! Will look for all of you in the bookstore!
