Easter Greetings and Memories

Spring and sunshine. A perfect combination for days spent outside, especially on this Easter Sunday. Many fond memories have resulted from my Easters of years past. Pastel dresses trimmed in lace, some featuring crinolines in their skirts. When I was eight I was so proud of my sparkling white patent leather Easter purse and matching shoes. My white gloves sported delicate rosettes fashioned from seed pearls on the cuffs. And how I laugh now at recalling the way my leotards never failed at working themselves into a position that prevented me from straightening them in public. After worship services my parents and I would head back home and find a couple lovely Easter baskets displayed on our dining room buffet. Green or pink grass sprang up from the bottom and cradled the colorful foil-wrapped chocolates and yellow marshmallow peeps. Always a delectable chocolate bunny standing in the center. Near the baskets rested a bowl of multi-colored dyed eggs wearing wax designs or the imprints from seasonal decals. After I changed into traveling clothes, Mom and Dad would host the first of my many egg hunts that day. No matter where they chose to hide those eggs, I found them pretty quickly. Of course, that only prompted me to ask if we could hide the eggs “just once more” before going to my grandmother’s home for Easter dinner. But my favorite parts of Easter Sunday were always the loving gestures, hugs and kisses from parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. Family togetherness meant the world to me on those Easter Sundays and remains my most cherished memory. Over the past week I’ve received holiday emails and messages from my dear friends that have brought smiles and turned themselves into more fond memories.

There are a couple dark-chocolate truffles in the cupboard. I might become tempted to sample one before this Easter Sunday is done. Funny thing about those chocolate goodies during my childhood. I never ate hardly any chocolate until much later in life. Sure I snacked on those chocolate bunny ears and worked my way to their feet, but most of the remaining candy was shared with friends or put in the family fridge where it lasted many months until finally disappearing.

Today I wish you all the sunshine and happiness of the season and hope your day results in many fond memories. Share your fondest Easter memories with us before the Easter bunny hops out of sight.

Hope you had a wonderful Easter, Shawna, and everyone else!

Awww, what nice (and genteel) Easter memories you have! Mine were quite different. We'd make a huge mess coloring Easter eggs, and they always came out blotchy. Easter morning we'd run around the house looking for all those horrifically-colored eggs and an Easter basket for each of us filled with jelly beans and chocolate. That grass would end up all over the floor in a tangled mess and by mid-afternoon I'd be feeling queasy after stuffing myself with hard boiled eggs and chocolate - what a breakfast! We never did the Easter dress and bonnet thing, and since my mom was Catholic and my Dad was...not, there was always a tug-of-war going on about that! And since our family was out in California and nobody else was, we never did the extended family thing either.

Now my boys are a little too old for Easter baskets. So we attended a sunrise service and then went to a movie. Then the boys filled up water balloons and had a water balloon fight in the street, since we had beautiful sunny warm weather in the high 70's.

Thanks for sharing your memories!

I'm disappointed by the chocolate bunnies this year. When I was a kid all chocolate tasted good. Now I eat it and think, is this stuff synthetic or laced with wax or what?

This is what I get for eating my children's candy. Guess I'll have to go back to Peeps.

I tried to comment yesterday but it wouldn't work. Wonderful post Shawna! I always loved those Easter egg hunts as a kid. One year at school, I found the golden egg and won a prize. Then someone in my class tried to steal it from me. LOL (though not funny at the time.) :-)

Hi, Jill!

I agree--those chocolate bunnies aren't as yummy as they were years ago. When craving chocolate a couple days ago, I indulged in a Harry and David dark chocolate truffle :)

I'll always fondly remember the Easter peeps and a special incident surrounding two of them. When I was in junior high, our next door neighbors decided to put in an in-ground swimming pool. While digging up their yard, they happened across two yellow peeps. Evidently, their beagle had raided their grandchildrens' Easter baskets and stashed a couple peeps away for his own enjoyment later LOL Such a precious dog. A perfect buddy for many years.

Thanks for sharing your Easter thoughts :)

Happy week wishes,

Shawna

Hi, Vonda!

Great memory about the golden egg. I'm thinking there must be a way for you to incorporate that Easter bit in a future book :) I also wouldn't have found the attempted egg-napping amusing when younger. Now, like you, it would make me laugh :) While going through a cabinet drawer one day at my parents' home, I found the mesh bag filled with plastic eggs we used for hiding long after the hardboiled Easter eggs were turned into deviled eggs or pickled and mixed with Harvard beets for family brunches.

Thanks for sharing your memory :)

Happy week wishes,

Shawna

Hey Shawna -

I'm running behind the bunny. He's hopped out of sight, but here goes anyway.

My sister and I had matching dresses with black patent shoes and little white gloves. Groan. Oh, if you could see me now!

I created different traditions with my daughter. One year we blew eggs and marbled the shells. We put them in a special basket on the sideboard each year. They are truly beautiful.

I used to put a trail of chocolate on the stairs for Easter morning, but our then dog insisted on foraging. That's bad!

Those are three lovely memories. I enjoyed reading all the other comments.

Much cheer.

Hi, Elen!

I have a feeling that bunny never hops too far out of sight :)

Thanks for sharing your Easter traditions and memories. I really enjoyed reading about your egg tradition with your daughter and the scattering of chocolate. Must try the chocolate idea some Easter. I figure if hubby sleeps in late, I can gather all the Easter goodies LOL

Mom and I had a special tradition with Easter ceramics. The niece of her beautician handcrafted the most beautiful ceramic whatnots. Every year during my childhood and into my teens, mom bought me an Easter bunny or some other Easter figurine for a keepsake collection. Those are some of my most precious possessions to this day :)

Happy week wishes,

Shawna
